Morning all,
It's time to move my, er, "beloved" MR2 'Munter' track car on to a new home.
The full chequered history of the car can be found here: https://www.mr2roc.org/index.php?topic=69843.0
But in short - this is a quick (laps Blyton in 1.14, Oulton Park in 2.04, Cadwell in 1.45 - all on budget road tyres, minus a couple of seconds easily if you want to fit some decent tyres), reliable, cheap, and most importantly fun car that you can just park up at the end of a track day, barely touch it until the next one, then give it a good ragging again. Rinse and repeat.
It does burn a "bit" of oil, it's basically a 2 stroke (fuel:oil in 40:1 ratio) but this seems to be getting slightly better the more thrashing it has, and I figure it changes its own oil every 3 track days this way, happy days. You just need to remember to give it a splash of your local motor factor's finest 5w40 after every session.
It actually has some really nice bits hiding under the ugly exterior. All of the upgrades were was done as it was 'converted' to a track car, so haven't had much use - except the seats, harnesses and wheel which were part of another project:
- Koni Sport inserts with Tein springs.
- Custom made full stainless exhaust system, with matched length, long 4-1 primaries (a lot like PPE). Not had the car on a dyno but you can bet it makes a bit more than standard. Sounds great on full chat and passes all 'normal' noise limits easily.
- Nice GRP seats with Schroth harnesses.
- Momo steering wheel.
- 6 speed box which shifts beautifully.
- Short shifter plus extender - throw is about the same as standard, but gear knob position is right next to the steering wheel.
- fully ducted in radiator with bonnet outlet. The car sits rock solid on temps and has reduced front end lift.
- Front splitter, full flat floor and big rear diffuser. This lot makes an estimated 150-200kg of actual downforce looking at how much the car drops ride height at speed, and from what lateral g the car will pull despite the budget road tyres fitted.
- Adjustable rear anti roll bar - easy access for handling balance tweaks.
- MLR braided hoses and a bunch of new copper hard lines. Brake servo removed.
- 600g (!) lithium battery, with cut off key so the immobiliser doesn't drain it when not in use.
Other stuff:
- Alignment set up with tons of camber (tyre wear is pretty even), a nice bit of toe in at the back to stop it getting lairy, and some toe out up front to make sure it goes where pointed.
- It's really light, like 750kg ready to go. This means it goes, stops, corners and handles like no other MR2 out there, plus it's great on consumables. I use Apec pads (about £15-20 an end) and they last multiple track days. The car is still on it's original set of tyres after 5 track days , with about half the tread left.
- You won't do track days any cheaper or with less stress / fuss. Trust me, I've done both ends of the spectrum and this is a reet good place to be.
- Super reliable. Done 5 track days (4 of them double driven) and not picked up a spanner, have only changed brake pads once and put fuel and oil in it.
The bad bits:
- Well look at it. Insert your own joke about 'only a mother' and 'Stevie Wonder'. The stickers have now been removed.
- Not a single panel is straight / unmolested. So at the end of it's life, sadly you won't be able to find a new home for any of these.
- It would be a really tough job to get it back on the road - I've ripped all of the un-necessary stuff out. So you'll need a trailer. I have a few space-savers which can be included if your trailer isn't quite wide enough to get it on.
Would anyone consider taking the car at no cost, providing my name goes down as a second driver on the first trackday you take it to and we share the driving? Would also be a nice way of handing over the car and showing you round its, er, features! I used to be an ARDS instructor so happy to add some pointers if you wish too.
Avert your eyes, here come the pics...
Get ready with the bleach for your eyeballs, round 2...
Oh, and here's another fun thing. The price will drop by £20 every week until it's sold. How's about that?
My utterly unhelpful contribution...
I love this car so much.
@MrChris something to sit alongside the scrap save? :) haha. It's a LOT faster.

Looks like a lot of fun and.. Jesus the noise in that video! As tempting as it is, I need roadworthiness to go with my track fun.
@AdamR28 is right about the MR2 making track days cheaper/less fuss. Someone will be getting a lot of bang for buck with this.
Its basically track prepped 2ZZ quick for £1200
Worth it just for the 8) ideas alone ;)
and a posh car killah to boot >:D
Ha. Cheers guys. But yeah, forgot to mention that bit - bhp/ton is basically the same as a 2ZZ car (around 190-200), but with smaller wheels it's effectively a shorter diff ratio, so it pulls along very nicely.
I am surpried this is still not sold!
This car is brilliant. I love the rat look. :)
I'll contribute a bit.
As you can see in the Stickers section I've driven that thing quite a lot.
Is Absolutely hilarious to drive! Cadwell was by far my favourite...
Also, is a great car to learn to steer by throttle...
Fk it! Can we crowdfund a purchase for the club & store with someone who lives mid-country near a track?
I'd pay just to watch "The Continuing Adventures of Munter". It's got a large element of Herbie Rides Again that very much appeals. Just add pantomime villain. ;D
That last video made me LOL
and the pictures you get are "That spectacular"
Yes, yes, I was missing the apex by A LOT.

We have enough to buy it outright, but unfortunately we won't have a forum to discuss it haha
That car looks an absolute hoot!
And on track tyres, I would imagine quite a weapon. On track tyres with a 2zz....ppfff
I have a mind to buy this and transplant the 2ZZ to my car but with limited space, advancing years and dwindling bank balance the idea poofed!

´the same as´ because of the almost silly low weight; it has the 1ZZ-FE

Isn't the munter a 1ZZ?

Yes. I think he meant transplant HIS 2zz into the munter

Sorry, I misrrad the sales write up.

Was trying to find this pic, thanks mate!
I didn't post my Cadwell video because it was a bit lairy there especially in the wet. Its much calmer with adjusted rear alignment, and even more predictable / easy to control.
But since sideways is fun...
If some sort of "syndicate" wanted to get hold of the car then that's even better I reckon, its exactly the ethos of such a toy.
The previous munter I "built", a Mk1 MX5, was actually given away for free through 2 sets of hands (including Maurici) before it ended up with the North East Westfield Club area organiser and they use it as a toy for the members ;D
£1180.
£1160.
£1140.
Missed a couple of weeks! Now £1000.
:'(
This still for sale.

This still for sale.
if not for the channel, the distance and Brexit I´d have it as a cool cheap spares car no doubt whátsoever and have the exhaust for free basically!
Nope still available...
I'll knock up a teleportation machine and send it over to you Petrus, how's that? ;D
Beam it up, Scottie!

Plenty of space to materialise!
Apart from all the other goodies and spares, it would save me the wheels quest ;)
@all; the wheels Adam fitted make a serious difference on the track and it´s a lót cheaper than a 2ZZ transplant.
It's Sunday so... £980.
Saw the MunteR2 today. Someone should really buy it, it's awesome!
Ha, thanks Chris. Great to meet you also. Hope the car was better behaved on the way home!
Now £960...
£940... :o
Thinking of taking it to a track day, whacking some 'For Sale' stickers down the side and offering rides / drives to anyone brave / stupid enough. If that happens, the offer would be open to any forum members to come along, and I can post the date / venue up if anyone is interested.
I've booked Saturday 20th Jan at Bedford - all welcome! Just sort out your own driver / passenger wristband. Let me know if you plan to come along 8)

I'm hoping to go to this but won't know until early Jan.
How on earth has this car not sold just on the basis of the posted video.
A crime is occurring here, and we're all complicit! :'(

Almost certainly due to its very limited appeal.
I think you missed a few "very"s out there Alex ;D
@MrChris are we going to see you a week on Saturday? 8)

It's looking very unlikely I'm afraid :( Wanted to get on track in Jan but looking like Feb will be the earliest for me right now.
Shame! See you another time I hope ;D

Yeah absolutely, I've got some Javelin vouchers and I bought the MSVT £600 for £500 voucher offer recently so need to start using them!
Bedford day was a success, in that the car ran well and took some more scalps. Still appears to be using less and less oil the more time goes on, happy days.
I'll consider breaking the car come April, would really rather it goes to a new home as is though.
Would anyone consider taking the car at no cost, providing my name goes down as a second driver on the first trackday you take it to and we share the driving? Would also be a nice way of handing over the car and showing you round its, er, features!
Just break it Adam, sod giving it away for free. Parts will sell quickly no doubt.
Sad situation.
No space. Not a track boy.
Looking like parts is the way.
I'll part it for you Adam if you can get it to Rainford.
One day when these cars are collectible this post will haunt all of us here.
Sad to see this still doesn't have a new home.
I hate hearing the "break" word in the 2 world. :'(

Perhaps
Recycled would less painful to hear!
New owner arranged ;D very happy. I'm sure he will make himself known at some point soon 8)
TFFT!
News travel fast... I've been told that a Mediterranean fat bloke that crashes cars in his spare time got it...

Well. We've just gone and done that. "Adam" crowdfunded himself slipping the car in my garage... I will crowdfund myself to keep it running. Offers on taking club members along will still be up when car is on track. Both Adam and I will be happy to show you the ins and outs of the car... and maybe let you drive it provided you are not a maniac (coming from me... you'll likely be fine).
Long live the munter2!
:) so happy this lives on :) long may it continue to to keep on running 8) 8)
