Title: Counterclockwise tap and die set?
Post by: markiii on June 13, 2005, 17:20
Anyone know where to get one?

having discovered how uneasy the easy outs actually are at teh weekend I'm thinking that if such a thing exists it would increase my chances of an easy out actually working.

Which bolts have left handed thread then?

Yes they are available, but you would have to contact an engineering tool specialist and they arent going to be cheap  s:( :( s:(

exactly, do you reckon an engineering specialist would need to make them or might have some in stock?

Not sure what you want to achieve, as they are only going to be of use on left handed thread nuts and bolts which in this day and age are not very common (typically only used on rotating parts where the direction of rotation may cause the bolt (or nut) to work loose - an example is the wheel nut on an E-Type jag)

Yes - an engineering tool specialist is likely to have stock in some dusty corner of their warehouse, but IIRC there is nothing on the '2 that will require them.

easy outs use a left handed thread to allow you to tighten them while removing whatever it is that you snapped.

unfortunately they aren't very good at creating the thread, as we found out Saturday.

if I can re drill and tap a left hand hole then teh easy out has more chance of working.

Though from ths ound of it, it will be too expensive to be worth while.

I've always found with any of the "easy outs" threaded or tap in, the only type of stud they will remove is virtually a new one.

The best way is to drill the stud to the correct size then re-tap, or if necessary hellicoil it  s:wink:  s:wink:

Mark,

you may want to try an oxygen component manufactuerer, a lot of there stuff uses left hand threads, but i hate to say it but the only way may be to get stuff hand made  s:? :? s:?

I don't know if this is way too late, I used to sell all this kind of stuff, left hand taps are as cheap to buy as right hand ones just about, dies are more expensive. If you havn't found anywhere to buy these the name and number of the company I used to work for is: Nuffied Engineering Supplies 01202 665544 they are in Poole i'm sure they would post the tap to you. Hope this helps.
