Title: Power steering refurb kit
Post by: jvanzyl on July 19, 2025, 09:58
So my second PS pump whines. I've flushed the fluid out and replaced with the ravenol stuff and apart from running clear colour it's still not sounding brilliant.

I found this on eBay

Yes I'm sure you can source all the little bits cheaper but yourself if you knew what sizes etc etc..
But I'm not quite inclined to do that.

EDIT -  Found the guide on Spyder chat.. https://www.spyderchat.com/threads/how-to-clean-out-your-power-steering-motor.154934/

I shall be doing this at "some point" in the future..

Decided to do it today.

Blew all the dust out (using precautions).

Still not too clear on how to get the communtator out..

Is the noise from the motor bearings rather than the pump end, you are only showing the motor end in the pictures. I would check for play in the bearings now!

So the noise from the old unit was from where the buses wore on the communtator, the new unit that had a whine is now silent following the refurb, but I think I have an airlock possibly as it's not providing any assistance despite the motor running

If you had the electric motor housing off, it is possible to get it back in the wrong rotational relationship to the pump if the original position was not marked. In one position, the pump will run backwards and pump the oil into the reservoir and make a fine mess. Spin it 120 deg in another position, it will run, but very slowly and will get very hot, very quickly and have almost no pressure. If the motor overheats, the PS light will come on.  How do I know?  Been there done that!

Right.. let me make sure I'm understanding you here.

The pump housing is this below - it can only go in one way right? The small o ring can only match up one way to the top bit..

But you're talking about the this housing here right?

How on earth does the orientation of the cap affect things? I thought it all looked the same! Currently I have the pump "running slowly" .. is there a way to identify the correct orientation? Say if you happened to tried to clean it up and can't tell which way it was on before.. ?

There is only one orientation that property aligns the brushes and armature to the magnets in the electric motor housing to make the motor run properly.  With 3 bolts. it is possible to be 120 deg out in either direction.  Unfortunately, unless the housing was marked before removal, there is no way to tell which is correct.  If the pump runs very slowly, it is also probably getting hot quickly.  The only "solution" is to pull the housing again (don't lose the wave washer), turn the housing 120 degrees and try again.  If you get it right, all is well. If that was the wrong direction, you will have oil everywhere.

Awesome.. well.. I shall give it a go and see what happens!
Oh and I discovered an easy way of seating the wavy washer. Use 2x  plastic clutch pencils in a narrow v shape.   :)
