Title: Direnza cold air intake
Post by: SurreyMR2 on January 22, 2026, 21:11
Hi

I've tried getting my answers from previous posts but struggling to find an answer although I found lots of interesting facts I didn't know before.

I have a standard 1ZZ except for Gravity manifold, Zero sports cat & Zero single exit exhaust. I'm currently using a panel K&N filter in the standard air box.

Recently bought a used Direnza cold air intake. It mounts the filter right at the rear above the cold air feed from wing side vent.

I'm not after more power, just the intake noise  ;D

I guess if I'm stuck in traffic that heat soak will be an issue, but I could make an extra heat shield to help this.

What I want to know is will I lose power fitting this?

TIA

Andy

The power is a subjective thing, some say good some say bad, its negligable either way.

You will get the noise. You might get some heat soak in traffic but thats not really a problem, once you get moving again it'll soon clear.

The main issue with some of these aftermarket intakes is the maf housing, some are a poor design and thats what can effect performance.

Thank you.

I've not fitted it yet.

As car is sorned I think it's best to wait till spring, drive the car with OE airbox fitted then fit cold air intake & take car out again & see if any noticeable difference.

I believe the Direnza kit is a good one & it certainly appears to be well made.

Cheers

I recall a great post many years ago by @shnazzle

Where he pretty much fitted, tried and reviewed all them.

Post was titled something like intakes all of them

Thank you. I have read this one but will read it again.

I would just to not lose any power, not bothered about gaining extra, just want the noise 🙄🤣.

The best intake is the one it came with.

I know, but I really fancy some induction noise 😂. Not bothered about extra BHP, just as long as it's not losing power to be honest.

I totally agree that the cold air that is force fed through the side scoop into the air box where the MAF sits is the best option, but it's very quiet 🤫.

Oh the induction noise from the Hurricane kit off the Lotus with ducting to the side vent is 100% the boyo. Especially with the slightly overbored throttle body, TTE exhaust and 200cell 2.5" cat

The noise was addictive.

I did get a bit tired of it on longer drives though and ultimately put the stock intake back in because I'm a total fuel-trim nazi

Don't know what all that stuff is but you had me at Lotus  8)

On a whim I bought a Direnza kit it seems to be good quality and the MAF is exactly same distance from inlet as the factory. The cone filter goes through the hole under the bar that bonnet attachment is on into the area next to coolant bottle. So it appears to be a good one.

Exhaust wise I have excellent sound, perfect balance in my opinion and no droning either. It's a Gravity manifold, Zero sports cat & Zero single exit exhaust with a K&N panel filter.

But at National there were other mk3s on the run up with cold air induction kits and they sounded great when pedal was to the metal  :))

I'm not after extra bhp just induction noise & car to run as it does currently as it's very good.

Cheers

Ok, read that all twice and I get it now.

Anyone want a cold air induction kit as mine is going on eBay this weekend.

I will maybe try removing the elbow as suggested in the post for some extra noise.

Thanks for all your help.

The back left corner of the engine bay is a very dirty place, - the pipe is then running right through the engine bay.
No point, IMO.
