Title: Brake bleeding - tricks to get air out of ABS unit
Post by: Superluminal on May 26, 2026, 18:48
I'm having problems with squishy brake pedal on my MR2.  I fitted braided brake hoses, but in doing so I stupidly drained all the brake fluid out and got air into  the master cylinder and into the ABS unit.  After the first bleed the brake pedal was so squashy the car was undrivable. I bled the master cylinder separately and then had some success triggering the ABS on the road and then bleeding again afterwards.   Two more bleeds saw decent improvement. I've now bled the brakes four times, driving the car for a bit and triggering ABS between each bleed.  The pedal feel is much better now, but it still squishy, and I didn't see any improvement on the last bleed.  I was wondering if there's anything else I can do? I've tried Dev's preferred gravity method as well as pressure bleeding, and most recently, Joesson's method using a one way valve on the bleed nipple.  I wonder if the rear wheels abs isn't triggering, and there is air trapped there specifically. Not really many low friction surfaces around to keep the ABS going on all four wheels

You may have to let it sit overnight to let small bubbles coalesce.

Start at the corner furthest from the master cylinder, which is left rear.  Bleed that one until no bubbles, not even tiny ones, come out.  Do the same on the right rear, then front left and finally front right.

even on the one operative kit, I still found it better to have two ops.

Even I cannot be in two places at the same time.
Apply pressure to pedal, open bleed valve, pedal sinks, fluid bleeds, close bleed valve, release pedal and repeat.

In the order C said.

I use a pressure bleeder, go around all 4 bleeders multiple times, and even with that, it often takes more that one session after driving the car to get out all of the air. Sometimes the first time you open a bleeder there doesn't seem to be any bubbles, but after a couple more attempts, some new bubbles are revealed.  Done correctly, the pedal should be very firm with the key off. If not, go around again.

Make your own pressure bleeder.
Just need a garden sprayer, a spare brake master cap, clear tube and a firewall fitting for the cap.
Just search on YouTube.
