Title: Thrown all its coolant
Post by: Craigjm on September 16, 2026, 23:31
On the drive home tonight my 04 put its check engine light on and within minutes the temp gauge went off the scale. Surprise surprise no coolant! When I tried to put some in to limp it home it quite rapidly started coming out under the expansion tank. Guess it must be a split hose or something sown there. Will have to have a look in the daylight. Anything in particular that it may be?

That's not good.

Not normally issues that end.
I was expecting from the front lower left rad hose.

Ive found that a "snake" cam is ideal for finding little leaks like this, you can get them fairly cheaply on Amazon and they plug into your phone. Allows you to see down in there. It's how I found my leak.

I'd try filling up the expansion tank with water and then somehow pressurising the system a bit (maybe a plunger or something over the expansion bottleneck hole if you dont have a pressure kit) to see where the water is pushed out. An open cardboard box laid flat under the car is also a half-decent way to find the drips, provided the undertrays are off.

Did exactly that whisperhead. Soon as added pressure could see the leak was at the front. One close look later and it's not the pipes at all it's a tiny hole in the radiator which had obviously caused an air lock which is why it looked like it was out of fluid. Swift radiator change (fairly cheap at £80) and it's all sorted so need to change any hoses
