Title: Does yours pop?
Post by: Anonymous on June 27, 2005, 11:23
My TTE (with intact pre-cats) has begun to pop, i love it but is it normal?

I know its just un-burnt fuel in the exhaust but i thought the pre-cats stopped it?

Dealer mentioned it the other day as abnormal!

Mine does the same James - however, I must admit, that every time I hear it (and yes, it does sound nice  s;) ;) s;) ) I do wonder if my pre cats are still in there or not..

To say mine pops now would be an understatement - I can get it to sound like the surrounding neighborhood is under fire from the US army!
I had the exhaust apart a few days ago and checked the main cat while I was at it as I was afraid I had been blowing large holes in it, but it was fine  s:) :) s:)

So you still have the stock cat or some Hass cat? Metal cats can take pretty much any abuse you can make...

Your local Toyota dealer.. Though they don't list them as "TTE" anymore, you just want the "Toyota twin exit exhaust" or somesuch words, it's a standard optional extra.

I have the race cat that Hass supply, it's very small and made by a company called Catco - I believe it is a metal matrix too.

If you are happy to go away from Toyota, I recommend the H&S - well I would, wouldn't I   s:wink:  s:wink:  IMO sounds a lot nicer.

Last time fitted one-off price was £400 + VAT, but getting 5 at once (if you want to run a GB) reduced the price to £350 + VAT. You will have to phone, but details on their web-site:

The cat supplied with Sean's turbo kit is made by Catco.  The actual cat membraine is made of metal unlike the stock ceramic ones.

Or, if you want a cheap TTE, someone has just put one up for sale in the for sale forum:

My one pops and farts all the time, mostly when I'm trying to drive quietly down my street @ 2am after a night out   s:oops:  s:oops:

I also get very very loud random bangs occasionally, makes the pedesrtians run for cover when that happens   s:lol:  s:lol:

gut your precats! they break down over time, egt ingested by the engine and cause serious damage to it.  often the dealers won't replace the engine under warranty.

youve been warned!

with my gutted precats and team moon duals, i had occassional popping.

with my ppe header/cat and apexi ws exhaust, i have extremely rare popping.

from what it sounds, you guys have a LOT of popping.  is that just a characteristic of the TTE exhaust?

I don't think it can be. Mine doesn't really ever pop. Just growls nicely  s:D :D s:D

in the hot sun yesterday mine seemed to pop even more than usual, bit strange really, does the extra hot air going in cause the fuel in the engine not to burn properly?? I'm not sure i can beleive that, so is it affecting the MAF sensor causing a over rich fuel senario, seems more possible to me and even more likely with the unichip.

Just thermal wrapped my manifold up the the hi-flow cat, pops like my dad after a curry night now.   s:lol:  s:lol:   Kind of like a toned down F1 car, as it has a very deep loud burble pop now.   s:P :P s:P
