Title: H&S Mounting Problem
Post by: Bongo on June 30, 2005, 15:03
I've had a rattle from my backend for a while now and it seems it is being caused by my H&S exhaust.

The problem comes from the drivers side, the part where the exhaust is 'hung' from the rubber mount. The bolt that goes through the rubber mount is colliding with the car at certain conditions and making a not so nice noise.

I don't think this is normal is it?

Is there any solution?

Am i making sense? I can take some photos if that would help.

push into position and then zip a cable tie on it to stop it from sliding through teh rbber

Mark, I'm unsure if this would work as it seems to be that the flex in the rubber allows the bolt to foul the chassis. I have taken a look at it and it seems that it is quite difficult to move the bolt within the rubber.

How about putting a jubilee clip around the rubber? It might stop some of the movement...

My prototype exhaust suffered from this quite extensively. H&S actually made the offside mount a little smaller on subsequent versions, so until now I was the only person who'd complained of this.

On my car the problem has been fouling of the heatshield to the right of the hanger, its only when you notice the rubbing marks that this becomes apparant. The first and easiest solution would be to remove the top mounting bolt from the heatsheild and put 3 or 4 washers behind the shield to move it a few mm to the right. On my old '2 this cured the problem entirely.

On my new car. I removed the heatshield, and used a hammer to reshape the shield in the area that it fouled. The extra space created prevented the rattle occuring.

I have put a jubilee clip around the sagging rubber mount, and then tighten'd the clip up, it worked for me...

I'll try a Jubilee clip then.

Could i get one from a DIY store?

What size would I need?

Any motor-factors will sell them, I used a 2" jubliee clip on the drivers side...I dont have a H&S exhaust, but i would think the black rubber mount should be all the same size...

Right i've tried a jubilee clip and after struggling to get it on I gave up.

However, i'm unsure whether it would solve the problem.

Whilst I was there I took a photo:

The bolt is fouling in the area i've highlighted red, just below the hanger post (is that what they're called)? It doesn't seem to be touching the heat shield at all.

As this is above the bolt it doesn't seem to be a case that the mount is sagging and so can be stopped by a jubilee clip holding it in place.

Any ideas?
