Title: Checking oil
Post by: Anonymous on July 11, 2005, 20:40
I think I know the answer to this one, but I'm gonna ask anyway...   s:D :D s:D

How far out will the reading on the dipstick be if I measure it while the car is on an incline (roughly 5-10 degrees), with the front of the car pointing down? It's where I park my car on my drive y'see, and it's such a pain to move the car to the next street (nearest piece of flat road!), turn the engine off, let it cool while I walk home, and then go out again.

I need to move.   s:( :( s:(

Aren't you meant to read it when it's at operating temperature?

I think that's what I read in the manual the other day   s:oops:  s:oops:

Through experience with this car is it definately better to check it when it is cool. As for the incline question Dan, best thing to do is check it once on a perfectly flat road, then check it again on your incline and make a mental note of the level, then when you check regularly on the incline you will know whether it is any lower than normal. This is the technique I use on my sloping driveway!

I check mine cool too.  It's hard enough to read as it is without the oil running off the dipstick as you pull it out  s:lol:  s:lol:

on the incline bit, and i hope this makes sense, if the dipstick enters the tank in the direct middle then the oil level will read roughly accurate regardless of the angle of the car, but if the dipstick enters the tank at either end then the readings are going to be amplified to over or under read

The dipstick enters the oilpan to the right hand side, in the middle of the pan. Any incline will cause an incorrect reading.

Thanks guys, appreciate that.

Just checked it now (on the driveway), and the level is sitting just above the full mark. Which is where it was when I got the car, and where it was before the 10k service (with oil change), and where it was when I checked it 5k miles ago, and where it was before the 20k service (with no oil change).

I'm happy enough with that.   s:D :D s:D
