Title: My 2001 has mixed tyres - Which way to go.
Post by: Anonymous on July 17, 2005, 17:34
The car was like this when I bought it from Mr T.

On the back are GT Champiro 50 205/50 R15 86V. They are in very good condition.

On the front are BF Goodrich Profiler 6 185/55 R15 82V. These are brand new put on by Totota dealership prior to my purchase.

What's peoples general views about this and what way should I shoot.

I would rather not buy 4 tyres but the price of the Toyo's against 2 others of the above could make a difference. Then where's the best place to go for 2 if that's the way to go?

Thanks

Stewart

Mixing tyres is a no no with the 2", splash out on a set ot Toyo T1-R's,  w www.mytyres.co.uk (http://www.mytyres.co.uk) w  is pretty cheap

real bad idea to mix the tyres, T1-R's are a good choice but do look at the tyre review for other options

also try http://www.camskill.co.uk

Thanks chaps.

It will be interesting to see if the handling improves with 4 tyres the same.

just the T1-r's will make a big difference even if you had had 4 of the same before

I noticed increased acceleration  going from the stock Yokos to the Toyos. The car just felt faster, i kept wanting to put it into second, floor it and grin. I guess it's due to the Proxes being quite lightweight?

not convinced on that, i've recently changed over myself and yes cornering seems better, but acceleration i beleive is purely phsicological. I have noticed though that the point where the tyre breaks away is now more progressive and gives loads of reaction time, i'm going to start playing with tyre pressures though now as they do seem to have a fair amount of sidewall movement

It might be that, it just felt faster to me - i was grinning. I guess it depends what tyres you had on before though.

I'm running 28 at the front and 34 at the back on my T1-R's, I do get a tiny bit more understeer, but get loads less tyre roll in the corners

I found the same when I switched to helium for inflation, car is about 0.5sec quicker 0-60 !!

I keep meaning to check it on a rolling road, as I believe I am getting about another 12bhp just from this mod !!

helium  s:shock:  s:shock:  thats a bit severe to make the car lighter, guess i should try and get a bit of nitrogen from work then and compare

Nitrogen isn't going to be that much lighter than air (which is 80% nitrogen anyway).

thats not the point of this though, the point is that theres no water content in it, we use nitrogen at work to inflate aircraft tyres and stop water from creating an offcentric action as the wheels spin up on touch down, F1 cars use the same gas to inflate there wheels

the helium coment was meant to sound scarcastic, but that never comes over well on forumns  s:roll:  s:roll:

mind you dont think our cars do 0-200mph in 0.1sec very often

Correct me if I'm wrong but judging from those tyres I'm guessing that you're stateside, in which case I'd recommend looking at Spyderchat, as I kinow some of the tyres available over there are different to in good old blighty. There's also a link to tirerack on the homepage - they usually have a good selection of rubber.

I'd heartily recommend the T1-R's, I had brand new mixed tyres on mine when I bought it, it felt a bit nervous and edgy but I'd never driven anything like a '2 before so just put it down to having to get used to the MR-rwd thing, 31days later i had a nasty little accident.   s:oops:  s:oops:    s:cry:  s:cry:

before I even got it back from the repairers I had a set of Toyo's fitted and the difference is amazing!!!   s:lol:  s:lol:

don't risk your pride and joy by having the wrong shoes on it, I know there are already several people on here that won't be making that mistake again, hopefully you won't become one of them!   s:) :) s:)

I have 17" Toyo's all around, all tyres the same width and the car handles great. When I got the car originally there were mixed tyres on it and it was ropey to say the least.. could be down to the owner before me not checking his air pressure regularly.. they were WELL out.
