Title: Mr.T to remove my roof!
Post by: Anonymous on August 10, 2005, 17:40
Well the ratteling behind my drivers seat proved too elusive for me so I dropped the boy off at Mr.T in Slough this morning.  They just rang and said they can hear it but have no idea what it is and will have to remove the soft top completely to investigate!
Has anybody had their roof removed and re-installed before and was there any problems with the result?
I've heard stories of people getting back badly installed and miss-aligned roofs.    s:shock:  s:shock:

I'm not sure I'd want that particular Mr T taking my roof off..  s:? :? s:?

I think I'm in the minority of people who have had their soft-tops replaced and not had any problems!

I'm not entirely sure why they'd have to take the whole roof off just to investigate a noise though: Surely most of what can (and does) rattle is well away from the roof mechanism?   s:? :? s:?

See!  Thats what I though too!  The only thing behind the luggage space is the engine bay.

Hmmm...

I'm worried now...

The only possibility that I can think of (and this is why I had my roof changed for a new one) is the rivets in the roof itself are loose. That caused an annoying rattle on mine, but it wasn't localised behind the driver's seat...

Heres the post I made when the noise started to really get to me...

Its more of a knocking sound.  I'll be picking the car up tomorrow and arranging a day for them to do it so I'll quiz them as to why they feel they need to take the roof off.
I just wanted to know from you guys if you regard the whole remove/reinstall of the roof thing as a very last resort solution.

I'd try stripping the cubby holes down myself at home first before I let Mr T. take my roof off. There might be something loose behind there...

Are the side panels loose in the cubby holes - the ones that can be removed for extra wdith?

If you have a hard top & its a plastic on metal tapping right behind the driver, it could be the rear window demister lead flopping about. If you haven't got a hard top, ignore this post  s:roll:  s:roll:

Do you not have this cable if the top is aftermarket ?

I only know from my own car which has the OEM hardtop - the connection for the rear window plugs into the hard top behind the driver.

Its a flying lead, & the other end is substituted for the soft-top's window lead where it connects to the loom behind the storage bin lining. (*'scuse the lousy description*)

So, when its not connected, its just hanging loose at either end.

If the aftermarket hard-top is equipped with a rear window demister, you'd need this cable to wire it in.

Also check the bolts that hold the wind deflector in its 'hinge' - these can work loose and cause a rattling noise that seems to come from 'somewhere behind you'.

AND FIRST PRIZE GOES TO...  SPIT!!!

Picked it up from Mr.T this morning and thats exactly what their senior engineer told me.  Apparantly stock cars (well '04 models anyway) without a hard-top kit fitted have this connector.
Well its come loose and they've said they might need to remove the soft top to get at it.
At least I know what it is now   s:roll:  s:roll:
I've also booked it in at the same time for its first service.  £118?  How does that sound?  Getting him to look at some blistering on the alloys too.  No joy on replacing the rusty discs though!  s:evil:  s:evil:   First 6 months only!

On a hardtop equipped car, the cable is behind the side panel in the cubby on the driver's side.  Take the panel off and see if you can find the cable.  You might be able to fix it in place yourself.

My 10k service was £111.11 (I think someone left their finger on the 1 key too long  s:wink:  s:wink:  )

Well, if you guess enough times you gotta be right once in a while  s:wink:  s:wink:

It is monumentally unlikely that the top has to come off to get at the cable (see Jason's post above), so don't let them do it. The top end may be tangled/trapped in the hood mechanism, but can be eased out with the hood half-up (or half-down!)

How much is that extra cable for a aftermarket hardtop ?
