Hi All,
Bought my MR2 on Friday - it is just 3 years old and with 18 K on the clock - got it for 9 K - bargin!
Okay - now the question regarding the precats....
... I have been scared by the posts I have read - but post on honest john ( w www.honestjohn.co.uk (http://www.honestjohn.co.uk) w ) says all 2s after VIN ...0043748 have improved pre-cat mats...
so should I still remove the pre-cats? Does anyone know if the failure rate for precats has decreased since the change was made? I guess I will remove eventually but I want to think through. If the cats are now better and warming the engine up before really pushing it is OK then maybe this is enough preventative maintence?
Comments?
This site is simply fab - lots of info and very friendly community...
Cheers,
Lee (Scotland)
Hi Lee, and welcome to the club! s:D :D s:D
My car is 2 years old. My pre-cats started to disintegrate after 15K miles. Make of that what you will. s:wink:  s:wink:
Seriously though, there's no reason for you not to gut them seeing as you're out of warranty anyway. They might never go, or they might have started to go already: Get yourself an O2 sensor socket (if you haven't got one already) and have a look for yourself. I'd still get them out sooner rather than later though...
GSB has done a superb write-up of how to do this, and a quick search should reveal all you need to know before you attempt it yourself.
wip em out, god i've said that to a few girls but never a bloke s:oops:  s:oops:
the thing you've got to ask yourself is the what if question, this is a known problem, yes its hyped up a bit, but even on the few gutting meets, evidence of small amounts of debris has been seen. I removed mine within the warranty period and never regreted it, in fact the exhaust note changed and now the burbles and pops are markdly increased. So is it worth it seeing as mine was still perfect after 31K? I still say yes, i do 20K a year with no second car, but now i dont give it a second thought, the worry about the possible problem is gone.
as a famous man once said, the choice is yours
p.s. welcome to the club Lee
