Hi,
Sorry to be a girlie but my car is currently in the garage. Diagnosis is whole new exhaust cos the garage dont know what is obstructing it! and the knocking from the botom bearings could be a sign of further problems.
So I want a new exhaust - TTE? Toyota quote £2k !!!! Anyone got any suggestions?
The car is a 2000 SMT done 40k miles
Thanks
Louise
sounds like your precats have gone.
up just spoke to the garage again and they agree. £2k for a new exhaust, plus £500 for TTE twin!!!

TTE is ~£450 fitted
I think the main cat is about £700
you dont need a standard exhaust if you get the tte but it sounds like they are trying to quote for it (i think its about £350)
Manifolds (with precats) can be had for much less from a breaker but i wouldnt bother with this, just get them to take the cats out of your existing manifold
However, the knocking from the bottom end sounds like the bearings are likley to be knackered and you may need a new short (bottom 1/2) engine or at least new bearings (if the crank is ok) ask Adam (jap gt300) for the price on that one
sorry to be the bearer of bad news s:wink:  s:wink:

Ok.. here's what you/they need to do:
Buy a new main CAT (not the whole exhaust, just the CAT section)
Gut the exhaust manifold (knock out the pre-cats with the aid of a hammer drill & cold chisel).
Drop the oil pan and inspect the big end bearings - they're probably shot (hence the knocking).. You can either go for rebuilding the bottom end, or bite the bullet and fit a salvage engine - I'd go for the latter (they can be had for £3-500 generally speaking) - see if Adam (Jap_GT300 on here) has any in or can source one.
Do not let them trick you into paying for a new TTE exhaust - you
do not need one unless you happen to be miraculously unlucky and be the only ever case I've heard of the silencer breaking up.
What will have happened (most likely) is this:
The pre-cats have broken up, dropped down and blocked the main cat.
At the same time, you'll have excessive oil consumption (it's a matter of conjecture as to whether this causes the pre-cat breakup, or vice versa) which means the big end bearings are starved of oil and fail (very quickly).
Hence, you need to replace the main CAT section (it's blocked by the pre-cat material) - try a salvage yard, or someone who has gone turbo and junked the main CAT, as they are hideously expensive from toyota.
And you need to gut the pre-cats (they aren't needed to pass
any UK emissions tests, only in the US) so they can never cause any more damage.
There's your exhaust restriction gone in one fell swoop.
Then sort the engine - as I say, you're probably best off getting a salvage engine, since you don't know what other damage oil starvation may have caused (cylinder walls, cam bearings and soforth), and a strip & rebuild will cost as much as a replacement engine and fitting.
Hope that helps a bit..
Has anyone managed to reclaim the cost of repairs from precat failures from Toyota and if so how and through the dealer or head office?
Sorry to hear what has happened to you Louise, I think that you are now well out of warranty (unless you extended of course) then it is down to the "goodwill" of Toyota as to whether they pay anything towards the costs. What dealer are you with, we may have a discount with them?
Hi,
Sorry to hear your problems.
I managed to get all mine replaced out of the three 3 manufacturer warranty...... BUT I had taken out an extended warranty with Toyota.....
BUT - as the engine failure is a know problem, you may get some mileage out of Toyota as a manufacture.
As the vehicle is under 5 years old, you may get a contribution from Toyota maybe not 100 % but something.
I believe the extended warranty company paid for the failure of my Cat and Pre-cats, fitting amount approx £2000 (Dealer price before anyone comments) and then Toyota the company paid for the engine replacement (well bits inside and the short block).... I think the total was approx £5,000 to £6,000 according to the warranty claim!
It's certainly worth a try, my father runs a Land Rover dealership and when the dealer can't do anymore, you would be surprised at what Landrover do as a company to keep customers.
Hope this info helps.
Cheers
