Post by: Anonymous on August 26, 2005, 21:30
Hi
took an 2000 mr2 36k fsh for a test drive, loved it, payed the deposit

But... when i took it for a second drive drove it a bit quicker  s:lol:  s:lol:
and when we pulled up there was a burning smell?? while driving the exhaust sounded a bit rough but he said they would check it alll out before i pick it up on wednesday.

my question is could it be the precat I have read about, how common is this and how much would it cost to fix if it did go wrong

Thanks
Ross

Hmm Burning Smell, sounds strange..... with the airflow vents being so close to the doors, if you have been driving it "enthusiactically" then sometime you can smell a hot smell, but not buring.....

As regards the precats, hmmm not cheap....

What you need to be aware of is that the engine failure can then lead to pre-cat and cat failure, due to excessive oil being disributed into them.

There is a very small possiblilty that particules could be sucked into the engine, but more likely the engine block has worn oval, thus the pre-cats issue, becomes rather minor..... (see many other posts re this)

My advice for what it's worth is:

If its a private sale ensure a FTSH along with an extended warranty, else you could end up with a dead duck as it's buyer beware in a private sale.

If its a dealer sale, ensure a year warranty is offers (if Toyota or Independant)

As more MR2 Roadster are now available on the second hand market, I would suggest purchasing one from a member on the forum, as you can at least then aford some Peace of Mind over being able to see there posts, history and love and car for their pride and joy.

I'd say get your deposit back and look elsewhere, if he wont' give the deposit back, consider this:

example : £200 deposit vs £6,000 for replacement block, Cat and Pre-cats inc Labour - or about £2,000 for replacement engine sourced and fitted independantly.....

only my advice - as asked for.... apologies if I've been a little blunt.

Best wishes

Darren J

Hi Ross,

I've just been into discuss entending my current, extended warranty, the price to add 2 more year after the intial 3 + 2 (5) is £560.

Considering I've had:

Wiper Motor £100
New Discs all Round £200
Engine £2,500
Pre Cats £600
Cat £900
Steering Pump £900

I've found my £540 (for original 2 year extension) very reasonable !

So as I'm keeping the car and then another £560 to ensure nothing else major goes on it seems a small price for the extra peace of mind IMHO.

Btw - My car has been owed from new and it's had all the love and care in the world, but unfortunately things do go wrong, from time to time, it's life.

anyway, hope the info helps and good luck with your purchase.

Cheers
