Title: Fitting a Unichip
Post by: Anonymous on September 1, 2005, 19:00
Having now had my MR2 for a year of fun motoring  s:D :D s:D , I've decided to buy it a present now it's out of warranty.  I'm thinking of having a unichip fitted to give it that bit more power and torque.
My nearest dealer is Clive Atthowe Engine Tuning.  Has anyone had any experience of this company?  Is there anything I should consider if having this done.
Thanks in anticipation of your responses.

dont know about the company but one thing to consider is a good face massage for after its fitted, the grin factor does pay a price after all  s:wink:  s:wink:

Spoke to them on Friday, costs £528 inc vat.  Also said it would take all day to tune.  How does that compare to your costs?

If you act quickly you can snap up one of the group buy Unichips with the harness to save having to splice into your wiring for £450; see here:

The time needed is then just a couple of hours to rolling road tune it.

Thanks for the heads up re the unichip & harness.

Now I'm a technophobe where engines are concerned (too many years of company car owernship  s:roll:  s:roll:  !)  Whats a harness? Where's the ecu? How easy is it to fit? Can any garage with a rolling road tune it? (see I know nothing!)

A harness is a wiring loom that connects the Unichip to the stock ECU, which itself can be found underneath the left-hand storage compartment. If you can put a plug into a wall socket, you can fit the Unichip, but you need to find a place that specialises in tuning the Unichip specifically.

Is the one for sale pre-mapped, might not need rolling road tuning?

Does anyone have any results they can post regarding power and torque gains after installing the chip?

0-60 improvements would be interesting too!

If you have a look at my www link my dyno printout is there.

The dyno graphs do not do the Unichip any justice at all. After taking a ride out with Lee in his Unichipped car at the weekend, you will be amazed as to how much more the car pulls (especially in 3rd) with the chip in. It's like someone's put a small supercharger in there!

If I wasn't going turbo, I'd have one in a second.

Wow! just had mine fitted at Millway!

Went for Unichip plus Induction/air filter improvement.

Really great guys there, really know what they are doing!

Had a new K&N panel filter fitted ( we took tempereature readings inside the stock air box and found the heat shielding was well designed so better to stick with stock box than to go for cone filter that will suck up all the hot engine bay heat!)

Initial dyno readings gave me average BHP of 144 (slight improvement on stock due to Veilside exhaust and de-cat)

After unichip Im pushing 155 bhp and as you all confirm it feels a lot livelier mid range, pulling all the way through the lower rev range.

Total cost came to under £550

How does this compare to other peoples experiences?

One of Mark's inlet pipes should sort you out with even better airflow to the the stock box.

Cheers, who is mark and where can I see info on these inlet pipes?

Very similar. 150 - 155 appears to be the bhp spread.

Millways program on "full throttle", so its only when the foot is hard down, does it spring into action, and it shows all through the range. But you are right, mid-range is where you feel it most.

Simon_C seems to be getting a bit more at 160bhp plus!

Any idea why this is?

What mods do you have Simon?

I am sure Simon can answer himself, if he's around. But IIRC his mods aren't OTT, but the high spot on his graph looked a bit "peaky", if you know what I mean.   s:wink:  s:wink:

Sorry I dont know what you mean by peaky! Im not very technical Im afraid! Could yo explain?   s:? :? s:?

I assume he means there was a peak, or peaks in the power output.

Instead of smooth even power. Kind of like spurts of power.
