Title: Hand Brake adjustment
Post by: Anonymous on September 5, 2005, 18:23
searched through but could not find any issues on hand brakes. Ive had mine adjusted twice now in the space of 6 months and Mr T said it was a common issue with the "2"'s. They charged me £40 a time...!! DOH!

Anyone know how to adjust it? as i will attempt to do it myself..

I managed a complete brake pad change last month with great success.!  s:lol:  s:lol:    s:lol:  s:lol:

Thanks

cant remember how to do it but the adjustment point is at the base of the handbrake lever itself, up to you whether you take the seats out first but its a piece of p**s to take out the centre console, 4screws, gear knob off and 2 conectors for the window switches. Give it a go

according to the manual i have that nut should be set to 48 in.·lbf which will equate to 5 - 8 clicks, back the nut off and use a torque wrench to reset/set it.

I do not believe that it is simply a matter of tightening the table.

When my car last exhibited the same symptoms, it was due for a service anyway.

Mr T told me that the car was susceptible to the handbrake mechanism on the rear calipers becoming corroded/gunged up with brake dust.

My understanding is that they simply stripped the mechanism down, cleaned it and reassembled.  The cost was about £20 and so clearly was not particularly involved.

If you simply tighten the cable at the lever you are likely to stretch the cable and not necessarily improve the braking effect.

totally agree, but the question asked was how do you adjust the park brake, not how do you service the whole system

It doesn't look all that easy as just tightening the nut - here's the 2000-03 instructions:-

1. CHECK PARKING BRAKE LEVER TRAVEL
Pull the parking brake lever all the way up, and count the number
of clicks.
Parking brake lever travel at 196 N (20 kgf, 44.1 lbf):
5 – 8 clicks
If incorrect, adjust the parking brake.
2. IF NECESSARY, ADJUST PARKING BRAKE
(a) Remove the console box.
(b) Loosen the lock nut and loosen the adjusting nut until the
left and right parking brake cranks touch the stopper pin.
(c) Start the engine and depress the brake pedal with the
thread force at about 490 N (50 kgf, 110 lbf) for 10 times.
(d) Tighten the adjusting nut until the cable has no looseness.
(e) Pull the parking brake lever up strongly once.
(f) Release the parking brake lever.
(g) Turn the adjusting nut until the lever travel is correct.
(h) Tighten the lock nut.
Torque: 5.4 N·m (55 kgf·cm, 48 in.·lbf)
(i) Release the parking brake lever and check the brake drag
of the rear brake by turning the rear wheel.
(j) Check that the left and right brake cranks touch the stopper
pin under the condition in which the parking brake lever
is released.
(k) Check that the brake indicator light comes on when operating
the parking brake lever.
(l) Install the console box.
