Title: I took the plunge and removed the pre -cats
Post by: Anonymous on September 15, 2005, 13:08
I have owned my 2001 MR2 for 3 months and taken it's mileage from 15,000 to 22,000  including a hamering 2 weeks up and down alpine passes in France / Austria and Italy.
I then found this web site and got scarred of the stories on CAT failure so last night I took the O2 sensors out and had a look. 3 hours later the car was rebuilt without the pre-CAT's. This included drilling out and re-tapping 2 of the 10mm studs when they snapped.

Thanks for scarring me, the LH CAT showed early signs of damage, the RH CAT had lost 2mm of ceramic from 50% of it's top surface.

The car has used no oil in the 7,000 ml of use by me so I consider last nights work as a good preventative measure to ensure that it stays that way.

Welcome Alan. Now you are in, the wallet gets thinner  s:shock:  s:shock:

I guess the small amount lost might still be around (maybe in the Main Cat), so its worth keeping an eye on things just in case.

This is going to sound like I have way too much money and not enough sense, but would anyone local-ish to the Chesterfield/Sheffield area be willing to gut my precats in return for a fair and reasonable fee??

I have practically no tools of my own   s:oops:  s:oops:  , am not really that 'handy' when it comes to mechanical stuff   s:oops:  s:oops:   (i'm a computer engineer, what more can I say!?!?   s:lol:  s:lol:  ) and, despite all the well written guides and what-have-you, I still wouldn't really feel that confident doin it myself due to the above points...

so, whad'ya say?!?    s:P :P s:P

Liz meant that there is so much information regarding the benefits and reasons for gutting your precats that you must have posted that question as a joke  s:wink:  s:wink:

Title: 1 weekend, first 500 miles without pre cats.
Post by: Anonymous on September 18, 2005, 16:49
I have just returned from a weekend in Wales, If I use my imagination then I think the exhaust note is a little "raspier" but the difference is so small in both sound and performance that it could be my imagination. Fuel consumption is unaltered from the previous 40+ mpg for a mixture of slightly illegal motorway speeds, gentle cross country roads, and spirited mountain passes.

Others have reported a slight popping from the exhaust on the overrun. Not mine but is this possibly due to air leaks in the exhasut system caused by re-using the old gaskets ?

Not on my cars... No leaks apparent on either of them. The noises aren't very apparent if you are still using the stock silencer.
