Had a search and couldnt find anything on this so decided to post.
I have a 53 2', just over two years old now and the top of the steering wheel is awful s:cry: :cry: s:cry:
The leather (???) has just come away and its horrible to touch. Is this considered normal wear and tear or should I go see Mr. T for a replacemnet wheel. Its truly bad and lets the car down. My previous car (rover 220 T) was older than this and the wheel was in great shape.
I've never seen it on any early, big mileage imports.
I'm sure they could do this under warranty.

The bottom of my steering wheel sounds the same - I put it down to trousers (well, jeans, usually) rubbing under the bottom of the wheel.. It almost has a 'corrugated' texture to it, with the leather surface rubbing off on the high spots.
This isnt just on the high spots, its like the top of the wheel (10 - 2) has just deteriorated(sp?) with a little bit of the leather left on here and there.
Will chance my arm at Toyota - you never know. If not, does anyone have a spare steering wheel lying around lol.
mine isnt worn away but cracked, only on the top of the steering wheel like its dried out, put some leather conditioner on and its better than it was but still not perfect but being a 2000 slightly outta warranty s:) :) s:)
Must admit, I put the damage on the bottom of mine down to me squeezing my fat ar*e out of the car! Never did notice if it was like it when I bought the car..
