Title: How can you tell your Pre-Cats Are gone ?
Post by: Anonymous on October 3, 2005, 10:56
I have tried to search for this and got post for removing and benefits.

I have had my '2 for a couple of weeks now, it was serviced 1000 miles ago, and I checked my oil this w/end, and it was very Low. (Have topped up oil now)

There is no smoke or oil coming out of the exhaust, like you would expect if a head gasket was gone, how else could you check if the Pre -Cat's where on there way out??   s:shock:  s:shock:    s:shock:  s:shock:

I have rusted bolts on the heat shield, so I can't quite get to the o2 Sensor to have a look in, but I'm getting that sorted. is there any other signs I should be looking out for?

Another question is, since I have topped up my oil, how quickly will it consume this oil if the Pre cats had damaged the Pistons?

It's a 2001 with 20,000 miles.

(All these posts about engines going and pre-cats failing have got me worried.)   s:cry:  s:cry:

The O2 sensors should come out without taking off the heatshield.

Actually, you have to take at least one of them out to get the heatshield off!

There is a special tool that you need to get it out, bit like an extended socket with a gap up one side. Try a search for o2 AND socket for places to buy one.

As to oil use, mine was about 400miles from full to almost empty when the engine went.

There are the two at the top you can see, and two on the leading egde at the front. As for replacements, do you mean these bolts? If so, yes you can buy stainless ones from most DIY stores.

Remove or just loosen all bolts on heat shield, lift up, and use a wrench (no special tool needed in case you don't have one, although I'm sure a special tool would make things easier).  It's a good idea to replace those heat shield bolts after a while, anyway, I think, as they tend to get rusty.  Even if precats don't show any degradation now, I believe they can go south in a hurry and you may forget to check again later on.  I really recommend a TRD header, or, if you don't mind the noise, gutted precats.  (I've read that gutted is louder than a TRD header.)  A TRD header gives you a small bump in power, mostly midrange.  Gutted header would probably do about the same, but a TRD header I *think* would flow a little better.  Just a theory.

EDIT: Oops!  You guys beat me to it.

I'd agree with that - the cat canisters will make nice expansion chambers that'll slow the exhaust gas down and cause turbulence.. Though still an improvement over having two lumps of honeycomb ceramic in there  s:) :) s:)

22 mm  is right but see the "proper" socket has a cut out.

See this post

You can do it with spanners etc, but an ordinary socket won't go on because it fouls the wire. Draper also make one at about the same price.
