Title: Changing the oil

Do I need to get a new sump plug when changing the oil?  On one of my old service receipts I think they have charged me for one.  

While I'm down at Mr T is there anything other than the obvious filter that I need to get?

plug no, however you shoudl technicaly renew the plug washer.

you can get away without, but it's pence so best not too.

Hopefully going to do this today if the weather holds out!

I thought the filter could be tightened by hand, on the box it says use a special service tool, what's that?

Its pence if you get it from someone other than MrT (£1.99+VAT   s:shock: :shock: s:shock:  )

Looks like my old washer had never been replaced when I dropped the oil myself a couple of weeks ago - no leaks, but it was thin, spread out and warped at the edges.

Like Mark says, it makes sense to replace it.

The filter can be tightened by hand - it seats against its rubber seal and can be nipped up tight by hand when its screwed on. The only difficulty is if you get oil on it and lose grip - use marigolds!

As for a service tool, its probably just referring to a glorified clamp-and-handle arrangement. I've never managed to use one of these succesfully but I'm cack-handed when access is limited  s:oops: :oops: s:oops:

I got a washer last week when I picked up the filter, was 70 odd pence, just looks like any other washer though!

PM returned.   s:) :) s:)

I reckon the only reason they use a tool to put the oil filter on is so that you can never ever get the darned thing off again without driving a screwdriver through it  s:lol: :lol: s:lol:

Can't believe MrT charge £2 for a sump plug washer though!  s:shock: :shock: s:shock:  Even Halfords only charge 30p or something, crikey.

OT, but I had former neighbor who tried the screwdriver through the filter method on his new toyota and still couldn't get it off. Let his wife drive the car with the holes in the filter, and when the engine seized he blamed it on her.

Was good to meet another club member and see the C2 project coming along!
