Title: Key maintenance for high mileage MR2
Post by: Anonymous on October 25, 2005, 00:34
Hi all,

I've just bought a 2001 MR2 with 96000 on the clock. I realise that this is a high mileage for a car which is often seen as a 'weekend' car, but the mileage meant that the price of the car fell into my budget.

The car is due a service, so I am planning to take it to my local dealer. I was wondering it this is anything I should look out for in the first few weeks of ownership, considering the mileage of the car. Any parts I should change just as a precaution?

Oh, and do I have the highest mileage car on the forum??

Hmm - you might have the highest mileage actually, although I'm fairly sure someone is up in the 80's.

As for precautions - do a search on pre CATs (there's a big thread on removing them - I'd advise you to do that if they haven't already been).. Other than that, just the usual servicing should be fine, really  s:) :) s:)

Welcome along, you could be the highest mileage that we have as well that the cats have not gone on, and that will be quite a record!!

Thanks, I will read through the thread on pre cats. I guess I can then check to see if the car has had them removed in the past.

Big congrats Unky. There are more and more people joining the forum with second-hand '2s now, so you're in good company and in the right place for support and advice.

Aside from the precat concerns, this is one solid little car in the engine department. I suppose the key areas to look at - given your mileage - would be the running gear - suspension, mounts, bushes, rods etc. Many will have been picked up and sorted at MOT/service as necessary, but I'd be interested to know how the car handles relative to a lower-mileage one.

You might want to compare the driving experience of your '2 with a newer one to see if the suspension/steering are getting "floppy". They're probably all OK and safe but you could be missing out on an even better driving experience  s:wink:  s:wink:

I'd also check the tyres, make sure they are good quality and the same tyre all round. Also check to make sure they still have tread left and are fitted the right way round if they're directional tyres.

Hi,

You may want to purchase a warranty with the money you saved buying a high mileage example.

P/S Pumps have been know to fail for no reason £900 fitted from Toyota.

Pre Cats / Engine Oil Loss - £????.?? you don' t want to know the price.

MAF Failure - £90 From Toyota.

A 2 Year warranty with cost you £600, so depends on if you expect nothing to happen or you only use it at weekend, I can't be without my car so have just purchased again, it proved a god send!

Other than the above, most mechanicals are sound, as others have mentioned, check tyres, wear, alignment, service intervals have been met, etc, etc.

Welcome to the club.

Cheers

Hi,

Ya Don't mine hadn't shown any signs at all, I was just in traffic one day and up popped the P/S Light and my steering became very heavy. No Noise, Fuss or anything.

Basically it will know when it's died, sorry to be vague, but I can only tell you how it happend.

Until the light comes on I wouldn't worry to much.

Cheers

Darren J

PS - Liz's went, but I think she got a replacement from Adam for alot less than Toyota would have wanted.

I paid £6100, which I thought was a pretty good price considering. Although maybe not quite as good as the deal you got!
I'm picking up on Saturday but I think priority will be a full service, refurb alloys and tyres.
Thanks for all the friendly welcomes!!
