Title: Took took sound..
Post by: spyderman on November 1, 2005, 13:11
its been two weeks time now that im getting this sound, coming form the rear left side of the car.

its getting noticable at low revs, and its increasing with speed.

when the car is moving and i press the cluch pedal, the noise disappears. If the car is in neutral, and i rev the engine there is no took took sound.

Its coming louder and noticable as i said at low revs with higher gears, e.g travelling at 50 km/h with 4th gear, or doing 30km/h in 3rd gear.

in case you might ask, no oil consumption, precats are gone 2 months ago...

i went to two mechanics yesterday.

the first one, after he checked my car, he concluded its the gearbox problem  , in fact its the two gears in the crown, mechanics call it two little stars, that might have the problem, the upper and the lower one. The total estimate for this will be more than $1400

the second mechanic, that is my friend, said that he 99% sure that it is not a gearbox problem, if the problem was what the first mechanic said, the sound would come only in corners and not on a straight way. More than likely he said, its an axle problem, that needs lubrication.

I really do hope he is right, are there many tranny issues around here on MR2ROC, or any suggestions?

Might sound awfully silly, but have you checked your tyre?

Some years ago this sort of thing happened to me, it was a bit of metal wedged in the tread. Couldn't hear it at high revs because the sound got drowned out. Obviously not there when standing still, but increased frequency with speed!

roger,

nahh...

i wish, although i have faced various issues with my crappy tyres (PIRELLI P7000), it's not that the problem..   s:cry:  s:cry:

I don't think it can be the tyre, cause:

Wouldn't be the first gearbox with issues  s:? :? s:?  I think you can get a used 6-speed for under half of that though...

jack it and check the wheel bearings

but they would make a noise clutch pressed in or not, it has to be a gearbox or engine noise.

another one bites the dust.

another opinion i had last night from another mechanic, was that its a bearings problem inside the crown.

anyways, things will clear out this weekend.
