Title: Hardtop fitting
Post by: Anonymous on November 23, 2005, 17:55
Small problem with my hardtop. Any help much appreciated.   s8) 8) s8)

I fitted my hardtop for winter but one of the catches wont fit. I store the hardtop in the official stand so it shouldn't have bent. It looks like the catch on the hardtop (NSR) isn't fitting into the top of the striker so there is a gap between the body and the hardtop. It looks like the striker itself may be slightly out of line. Any ideas why this would be or potential solutions?

I have just had a new roof fitted. Do you think this could be a reason for the striker to move?

Cheers

James

It's unlikely to be the hardtop. So I suggest you take off the quarter panel loosen the striker, put the hardtop on and adjust striker to fit. HTH.

Thanks for the help. Is removing the quarter panel a difficult job? Could the problem have been caused by the fitting of the new roof? If so, I could get the garage to fix...

Cheers

yes, they probably would have removed these attachment points to get access to the softop mount points

heres how to get access to the hardtop mount points

open the door and pull the trip that goes along the bottom of the door sill, once thats off open the cubby holes, remove the small panel inside and then on the top of the panel with the seatbelt going through it you will find some small round clips, with a round pin in the middle, push that pin in about 2mm and pull the whole pin out. Once all the relevant pins are out, pull the whole panel (the one with the seatbelt going through it) towards the front of the car, you should find what you want behind there

All of the latches can be loosened or tightend by the long nut that runs throught the center of the latch mechanism, you may get enough adjustment to sort it out and saves taken everything apart.

I hope this helps

Hmm, I've found that when the hard top is one mine, the latch above the driver always rattles a little. I've tried adjusting the centre nut on the latches to add/remove tension elsewhere, but I've not had any success.

Are the hard top mounting points ajustable at all at the safety belt and rear of the car ..? A couple of mm of adjustment would probably put enough tension in the latch to stop it rattling ..

They certainly swivel (around the lower bolt of two) fore & aft a couple of mm or three, but I'm not sure they move 'up & down', if you see what I mean..

Though given their angle, swivelling them fore a little would also naturally move them down a smidge, I think (or vice versa, I can't remember now  s:) :) s:) )

I was just reading through the Spydermagazine article about fitting the hard top. I assume that the hard top 'striker' is the same as a the hard top 'mount'? Anyway, it is the mount that is not inline with the 'clamp'. Looking at the picture:

it appears that the 'mount' cannot be adjusted but is bolted in place.

Am I missing something? Thanks.

I believe (though I've not confirmed by doing it myself) that if you loosen the bolts a little, you'll get a few degrees of wiggle room, so to speak..

That's correct, it's not a "tight fit".
