When my engine blew, the dealer didn't change the main cat and it was blocked with the broken precats...it did just that, was fine up till 100kmh (60mph), but didn't go above that.

If that's the case, I'm afraid you might be looking for a new engine  s:oops:  s:oops:

But check the precats first...search will tell you more than you'd ever want to know about them.

sounds like the symptoms of when the precats failed on my other mr2, if you've just bought it from a dealership, get your money back very quickly whilst you still can!

hope it works out ok for you.

Richie.

also, worth mentioning the car can go into a limp mode when certain errors occur such as a faulty sensor - you would have a check engine light on. perhaps you could be lucky and this is all it is. if so, get somebody with a diagnostics reader to check it out for you asap.

oh another thing - does the car appear to be smokey when its running?

Hi,

The VVT works all the time, it's just that at about 4.5k, the engine operates more freely.

This was the symptom I had when my Cat became blocked.

Although another alternative to look at may be a broken MAF, which ensure the oxy / fuel mix is correct, if this is faulty it causes a similar problem.

Question - does it feel like there is loads of pressure but no go at all at about 4.5k and 60mph ? if so, it's really does sound like a blocked cat, which is caused by the pre-cats falling apart, which will have probably been caused by excess oil being released from the engine, which will mean a cat, pre-cat and short block replacement..... doh!

anyway, hope you get it sorted out (FOC).

Cheers

Darren J

For the record...if I disable the VVT-i from PFC, the car still runs just fine to the revline. It's just missing some power it could have, but you wouldn't even notice it, if you didn't know how it was before.

I'd put my money on the blocked cat. And if they just fix it by taking the trash out, be VERY careful. The engine might already be gone  s:? :? s:?

dont muck about m8, full refund, do your homework on precats etc here then go elsewhwere knowing exactly what to check before buying. as mentioned by tem any repair they do might be too late to save the engine. demand a full refund NOW, the car was not fit for its intended purpose so invoke the sale of goods act if the dealer gets stroppy, if you bought the car on finance inform the finance company that the car was unfit for sale and that you are handing it back, they will then fight the dealer if need be. i would not accept the car under any circumstances as there is no way of knowing what damage has already been done. get your refund, there are plenty more out there. stand your ground and you will sleep easier! good luck.
