I've just got my car back from Helensburgh Toyota, after dropping it off on Monday Morning.
Basically, the car was making a whirring noise through the gears so they diagnosed it as some of the bearings having failed within the gearbox (they never said what exactly) this was covered under my extended warranty which was handy as it was about £400 quid to repair I think.
I also had them service the car (at a cost of £105 which i also think is quite good!) this being the 5 yr / 50k service.
The car seems a bit sluggish since i collected it so I took it a quick run to see if it would improve once the car had warmed up to normal temperature. Unfortunately the car just doesnt feel as fast as it did before although it is now a lot smoother and quieter. Its by no means slow either, just not got the same "Kick" it did before.
Anybody got any suggestions as to what could be causing this? is it just because its got new oil or whatever? (this being the first time i've had this mr2 serviced)
any clarification appreciated,
Richie.
Strange.... new oil, filter, etc normally makes the car more spritly.
Maybe it's just the weather conditions, wet roads, taking it easy ? I don't know.
Mine with 80k on is still as tight as when I bought it (that probably the new block which has only done 20k s:oops:  s:oops: )
try a more detailed explaination and then we may be able to help.
Cheers

cheers for replying mate....
this ones hard to explain: its as if the car is slower at revving up, but it still revs? if that makes sense? its not really to do with me taking it easier or not, its just when i put my foot down the car feels a bit laggy.
Im under the impression that its probably something which will gradually disappear over the next few days.
My assumption is that because they've fitted new bearings on the gearbox, perhaps they've not slackened up yet? is this feasible?
Richie.
Hire or borrow a Ford Ka for day and clock up a few miles.
Jump back in your MR2 again and hey-presto, muchos power!
I used to find myself thinking along these lines in a 300bhp mk2 until I jumped in a slower car for a day or two!
It was only then that I could appreciate just how quick it was lol
HTH
lol fair enough.
Now that i think about it, we have an astra tdi estate at work and everytime its serviced, the exact same thing happens - its a bit laggy but becomes much smoother and quieter. always seems to wear off after a few days so hopefully it will be the same with mine.
Thik il do another maf clean and ECU reset tomorrow.
Richie.
s:lol:  s:lol: s:lol:  s:lol: That's why I always get a Yaris as a Loan car then ! s:) :) s:) s:) :) s:)
So when I get back in mine it feels like a rocket ship!
A few grand prix light starts might help - show the Saxo boy that he should by a "Real" car s8) 8) s8)
Well I hope after your astra estate drive you feel more confident about your MR2 to go quickly, just not to fast in this lovely, wet, grimy, weather.
Just a point to note, it's worth checking your treads at this time of year, I'm having my rears replaced after only about 11,000 miles, but after smashing it up a couple of years ago due to poor rear grip - i'd rather it be £150 for the tires, as opposed to £4,000 worth of insurance work ! (Sorry to be a nanny, but I am now!)
Oh plus - think about a outside temp gauge as well - for though's lovely cold morning!
Cheers

A spell driving the MR2 makes my other car feel much quicker!
Got it sorted s:D :D s:D
a couple of minor things really...
1) cleaned MAF sensor
2) reset ECU
3) the elbow that feeds cold air into the air box hadn't been reconnected so basically the air box was drawing in hot air out of the engine bay = less dense.
when toyota had my gearbox off, they had the battery disconnected which reset the ECU. once they had completed the job, i think they may have left my engine sitting at tickover so that when the ecu was on "learn mode" it would pick up that the car wasn't being driven spiritedly and must have gone on to some sort of super efficient mode.
Does this sound plausible?
Richie.

Aye! With battery off and ECU reset you'd lose any of the mapping tweaks that apply to your driving style (not necessarily as a result of long idle, but maybe they did a test drive?). The fact that it was re-learning with a warm air source probably didn't help the situation.
Glad you're sorted - go boot some rubber s:wink:  s:wink:
cheers mate - I'm well chuffed now that the car is back to its prime s:D :D s:D
