Title: Erk Gears Problem (I lost some)
Post by: philster_d on December 5, 2005, 08:48
On my way to work today I got stuck in bad traffic.

So I started a 3 point turn.

Nicely forward, no probs. Blocking the road now.

Select reverse, car still goes forward.

Gearstick now goes floppy.

One or 2 forward gears still work but there is no first or second.

Did the arm pop off from the short shifter or something ? ideas before i go and blindly start prodding. Tx

Are you managing to get into neutral OK? What gear are you getting when trying for reverse?
I suppose the easiest check is from the engine bay to see if the cables are OK that end & check for play. Otherwise its console off  s:cry:  s:cry:
If its floppy but working, my thoughts are that its the ball joint cradle on the gearstick thats popped loose, or the retaining pin (with the clamping washer) on the selector frame.

Thanks spit, we do think its stick related as only fitted s/s on saturday.

Its been a great mod felt real sports car like. Unfortunately a bit too sports car like if it needs a rebuild after every drive.   s:lol:  s:lol:

hehe, no just a slight hicup.

Thanks for the tips,
Philster.

OK yes 100% correct.

The retaining "star" type washer was broken.

Went to toyota and they said we dont do replacement ones! its the whole assembly  s:shock:  s:shock:  or nothing. So a few hundred quid, probably.

So we set off in hunt of this little village, back street, bolt shop.

We found a similar, not identical, retainer washer so I ordered 2.

Total cost was.....    12p

Just fitted both on and tested everything and its all great.

Thanks everyone for the input and once again thanks to SuperKanoeJunkie

Just a point for any other reader, MrT DOES sell the washer.

Or put it another way, he has a part number for it. I have it at home, I'll add it to this tonight in case its required (unless somebody comes up with it before).

is that the one that goes on the side only use once type thing as mine is cracked so if you do have the part number that would be a big help thanks

kind of 'flip washers' retainer.

The toyota guy pulled up the epc, and then the gear shift area. But, that part wouldnt show up a number, so he went for advice. Came back and said dont stock it, could order it in a week or two. It is a sub assembley according to him.

Anyway the ones I used were 12p so if you need more I can drive over to guildford and get some and post em on, no problem.

Just tell me where.

Regards,
Phil

dont know where you're getting that p/n from Roger but it would sure be useful posting it up here, the guy at Mr.T showed us the breakdowns and it wasn't on his ones, just the whole assy  s:? :? s:?   but as Phil's said there was a truly excellent shop near him with several thousand little boxes of nearly everything and sorted it in nearly 2 seconds  s:D :D s:D

Oh and as a result of this exercise I have developed a fear of 3 point turns and the reverse gear in general.

Now I know why I allways turn round by spinning the back out.   s:lol:  s:lol:
