Title: This should be so simple...
Post by: Anonymous on December 5, 2005, 20:19
...and I feel stupid beyond belief for asking this. When I bought my '2 it had a personalised number plate which the previous owner wanted to hang on to. Paper work had to be sorted first, so I was driving around on the personalised for a few weeks.

Anyway, long story short... those plates have come off and I've had to 'stick' the orginal plates back on. That's all well and good except the front plate is attached to 2 pieces of metal on the grill that can't even be classed as brackets. Now I've tried all-sorts of adhesives to get the plate to reside in place. It just will not stay there.   s:twisted:  s:twisted:

Any idea's how the plates are/were orginally held in place?   s:oops:  s:oops:    s:oops:  s:oops:

Got a photo? I've got the facelifted bumper, so mine just screw into a designated bracket.

For a quick fix, there's always cable ties.

I can get a pic tomorrow. Even if I wanted to use cable ties, there's nowt on the back of the plate to hook them through and there's certainly nothing to suggest they were screwed in place.

It's almost as though they were attached with sticky-back plastic.   s:? :? s:?

I was thinking more along the lines of drilling a couple of holes in (you'd need to anyway for the screws/bolts), and tie it to the plastic grill.

Nemisis, is your car a black '02 with H/T & air? Third owner? Reason I ask is that I attached my number plate on my old black '2. Doubt it's the same though. I bought some plate mounts from Halfords (kind of triangle-shaped bits of brass-coloured metal) and used exterior velcro to hold the plate to these. It did away with the screws.

Or black '01 SMT HT AC? I used similar Halfords brackets: they screwed into the grey bumper plastic and then used adhesive strips to put the number plate on. The brackets (including the all important strips) are only around £5 a pair and perfectly adequate.

Double sided trim tape, with a Halfords velcro for back up, is what i used when I took one of mine off.

It is a black '02 with h/t and aircon but I'm the 2nd owner. Close but no cigar.   s:wink:  s:wink:

It does have the triangular brass brackets though... I think a trip to Halford's at the weekend might be my best bet.   s:) :) s:)

B+Q do self-adhesive waterproof (the adhesive!) velcro that really sticks like the proverbial to a blanket. Both of our cars have plates attached with this.

Hi Nemisis,

yours is a pre facelift, therefore you don't have the mounting plate of the post face lift ones.

THe front plate should be secured with Screws, mine is stright into the dimpled grey plastic.

As long as you get the alignment right, it won't matter, as you wont be taking them off anytime soon.

your only other option is to buy the mounting plate of the post facelift model, but you will still need to attach this some how.

Hope this helps.

Cheers
