Title: Tracking/tyres
Post by: Anonymous on December 9, 2005, 08:21
I've got an issue with my original front tyres. The inner edge has worn considerably more than rest. Mr T has told me my tracking is ok and it's just a characteristic of the car as it's set up for toe-in to improve the handling. However a local tyre centre said my tracking is out and they should be set parallel. Although his computer only gave him settings for the pre '03 model which stated a very wide tolerance.   s:? :? s:?

Don't suppose anyone has the recommended tracking settings for the post '03s?

The rears are getting low but are ok for now after 10,000 miles, but they'll be going as well.

Also, as I'm going for a new set of Toyos T1-Rs in 195/50 15s and 225/40 16s what pressures are considered to be the best?

Andy

<dredging memory> IIRC neutral toe will give you a very 'lively' car with sharp turn in but at the expense of it being twitchy. Most cars are set to run a small amount of toe-in which gives you stability in a straight line and maintains decent turn-in..

I have the alignment sheets for mine at home (pre '03, though I can't see there being any great differences).

What were the current settings (toe/camber front & rear & thrust angle) on yours?

Thanks for responding so quickly.

I don't know what they are at present. His assumption was based upon tyre condition. Unfortunately I can't remember what the computer said but the figures were very wide ranging!

I have to admit I'm not keen on the parallel idea, but he did seem very confident and knowledgeable and it is a independent garage I've used previously and would use again.

My only other thoughts are that the wear is down to my driving and my propensity to throw it into corners (of which I have a lot of on the way to work!)   s:twisted:  s:twisted:

Perhaps it's a combination of both?

Small toe out rocks  s:twisted:  s:twisted:

I don't find it twitchy at all. Most of our roads are kinda groovy, so the car wouldn't go straight even with toe in if I wouldn't hold the steering straight myself  s:? :? s:?

Yeah, but where's the fun in that?  s:lol:  s:lol:

mine were origionally set 3mm toe in, never had an issue with that and she turns in brilliantly. As for the Px's on the Toyo's i run 28F 32R but then again most of my driving is on Motorways  s:( :( s:(  , i do drop that to 24 on trackdays and alike at the front

*info on Px's*

Your local Mr T obviously didn't know much about how tracking affects wear, too much toe out causes inside edges of tyres to wear and too much toe in wears outside edges.

Another factor to consider is camber angle, ie the number of degrees from the vertical that the wheel is displaced,  if this angle is incorrect this again can cause tyre wear as you described.

I don't know what the relative settings should be for your 2 but a GOOD tyre specialist with optical alignment equipment should be able to sort it for you.

Hope this helps

I'm sure it does, compared to many other cars. But why stop there?  s;) ;) s;)
