Title: Turbo?? - how, where, who
Post by: Anonymous on December 9, 2005, 15:08
Hello
I'm sure this is a really straigh-forward question for the petrol-heads among you.  I have a 02 mr2 and want more power.  I see there are may retro-fit kits available, but there is no way I could fit one myself.  Which should I get, where from and who should I get to fit it?  Bear in mind I don't fancy a trip to outer mongolia for atilla the turbo company to do it ( but anywhere in britain is fine)
Thanks
Shaun

Just to provide balance, Gas offers a fitting service around Europe for his C2 kit (or I can do it for you haha!!)

IIRC, Gas's price competes well against that set by Thor.

I'd probably do it for a jar of coffee and a packet of Hobnobs. I was happy as a pig in poo installing mine  s:lol:  s:lol:

I'll second what Adam said. Thor is by far the best option in the UK atm, unless you really fancy a trip to Hungary.

.....I have to agree too; if you're looking for an essentially "turnkey" solution with least hassle its the (?only) homegrown option at the moment.

It'll be interesting to see what the future brings - with the '2 being discontinued and a new breed of second-hand users taking ownership, we may see some other UK-based performance specialists coming on board with turbo offerings to tempt the '2 owner. This can only be good for all of us  s:wink:  s:wink:

I don't agree completely. All is done in Hungary can be done in UK, no need to go to Hungary. Also, with the difference in price of both kits Gaspar can install it to you at home and you will still have some money to spend in other goodies, always needed in a turbo car  s:wink:  s:wink:

Have a go yourself..Theres plenty of help on here and Spyderchat...
I'm so glad i did mine myself (P.E turbo)
You could try 'whifbitz' (think thats his name) on here, he was supplying and fitting the P.E turbo kit to his customers cars...

True enough, but what happens when you start having problems with the car (and you will have problems) and Gas has gone home? Sure, he's just at the end of the phone and will spend as much time talking to you as you want, but you can't just take the car back and pick it up when it's sorted.

From Shaun's post. he has no desire to fit it himself, therefore I'm presuming he doesn't want to spend his weekends tinkering with it to get it running right. In that situation, Thor is really a no-brainer option: Drop car off, pick it up when 100%. Any problems, you take it back and let them sort it.

Although dare I say it, if you're really that uncomfortable about putting a turbo on an MR2, then you really shouldn't be thinking about going FI in the first place.

Thanks All - big help
One more thing.  If I had the Thor fitted, are there really problems with the body.  I knoe TTE reinforce it as part of their package.

What year is your MR2? The post-facelift ones (03+) had extra body bracing that will help the chassis cope with the extra power, and that should be plenty enough for the Thor (or any other) kit.

Saying that, even the most boggest of standard MR2 will cope with the extra power: It's mainly down to how you want the car to feel. If you want it soft 'n' sqidgy, leave it as stock. If you want it more focused, then Corky's plate and a front strut bar are an absolute must.

You can also take C2 kit to Thor and they will help you!  s:wink:  s:wink:

Well, there is that too... But then you could say the same with any turbo kit for the '2, and if you're going to Thor anyway I'd buy theirs.
