Title: MR-S Turbo: Top speed related questions
Post by: Rowland on December 15, 2005, 19:35
Hi all,

I've got a couple of questions in relation to the top speed of a mk3.

Please note.
Fortunately for me I live on the doorstep of Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground and have the very occasional opportunity for a quick run up the strip rather than exercising stupid speeds on public roads.

With that in mind I'm keen to know the theoretical top speed of my MR-S Turbo?
I have seen 135-140 indicated on the speedo, is there much past that?
Am I to presume the gearbox is the limiting factor and at what rpm?
The car really does accelerate surprisingly well at 100+ unlike the n/a mk3 which does tend to struggle at these speeds. So much so I'm confident that's it's actually quicker and certainly feels more 'planted' than my old 300 bhp mk2 Turbo.

The car is a 2000 SMT Turbo'd MR-S by the way.

Thanks in advance.

Remember, speed is for the track not the road.

Martin had a GPS verified 152mph (IIRC) on the way back from Essen   s:shock:  s:shock:

Was Martins car a UK Roadster or an MR-S I can't recall?
Strange that the Jap models should be geared lower than their UK counterparts, any known reasons for this?

Mostly because every car in Japan is limited to 180 kmh or 112 mph.  There is no need for gearing much past this point as it's against the law for manufacturers to produce them.

Obviously when they arrive in the UK most are de-restricted from an electronic point of view

Rowland,

Interesting one. I got to about 125 in Germany on motorways made of concrete sections before I backed off as the car didn't 'feel' right to me - perhaps a little too twitchy. Chatting to a couple of people they've said aerodynamically the Mk3 has an unsettled phase around 110-125mph before settling back down again.

Big speeds really aren't my thing - give me a twisty road any day. Having said that, at the Nurburgring I was seeing 100-110 on the long full throttle uphill climb out of Bergwork and 120+ on the run after the final straight - the Roadster felt fine then.

I don't doubt Martin's max speed run figures at all, the car feels easily capable of that.

Gearing - well, the final drive was 'shorter' which means for the 1ZZ engine plus a JDM or USA gearbox you'd get to 60mph sooner than with a longer geared European model.

This makes sense, given the JDM 180km/h speed limiting - there's no point gearing a car to reach much beyond this - but in Europe, we have German Autobahns  s:) :) s:)
