Hi all,
I was out giving my '2 (2003) some stick up a motorway sliproad the other day. It accelerated hard up to 6,500 rpm, and as soon as it hit the red line, it was like someone had put the brakes on.
Is this normal? I can only think it's the electronic limiter to prevent damage to the engine.
I used to have a new style Mini Cooper, and when that hit the red line, the power kind of tailed off, it didn't feel like the car was being 'braked' unlike my '2.
Anyone else had similar experiences?
Matt
*edit* sorry to the mods if this should have gone in the troubleshooting section)
Yep - it feels pretty much like jumping on the brakes (well, really you're just arresting the accelleration, but that's what it feels like).
It's a hard limiter - sounds like the cooper had a 'soft' limiter (electronically reduces power gradually - though there's always a hard limit somewhere, to prevent people grenading the engine)
I don't think I've ever had the '2 up to the redline as I get precisely Zero joy from doing so - doesn't make the car go quicker than an earlier change and is so harsh it's just no fun at all. Used to judge the CTR to 1rpm off it's 8250 limit by sound alone as the engine was so smooth and a delight to rev. Hmm, K20a engine conversion anyone? s:twisted:  s:twisted: s:lol:  s:lol:

I believe someone is already doing one over on Spyderchat..
Back to the limiter s;) ;) s;) I did think of one other thing - it could have been that the torque just tailed off so much on the Cooper that you'd think you were hitting a limiter when you weren't..
Dunno really as I've not driven a Cooper s:) :) s:)
I only hit the limited once in the MR2 in all the years I had it, that was on an onslip, I think its a nice reassurance that you won't blow the engine, it only cuts out for a nano second and I wouldn't describe it as harsh. Hit it in the Porker first day I had it whilst driving it home s:oops:  s:oops:
I hit the CTRs a few times when getting used to it - just so damn smooth compared to what I was used you, you just didn't know you were up in the rev range that far.
I've driven the wifes cooper and nailed it to the redline (almost) and as it doesn't have much go, it does feel fairly smooth at the top end. I suppose each engine and it's software reacts differently to the limit, some stutter, some drop like a stone at the red line - all down to the 0's and 1's as well as how the hardware reacts.
