Title: Stuck CD
Post by: Gazz on January 28, 2006, 16:35
OK, I had the fisher price head unit removed and an MP3 player installed today.

The problem is that when the fisher price unit was removed there was a CD loaded (Jamiroquai - Dynamite if anybodys interested   s:) :) s:)  )

My question is, is there any way to remove the CD without having to plug the head unit in again   s:?: :?: s:?:

Hammer.  s:wink:  s:wink:

Seriously though, I don't really know. I'd just plug it back in for the 10 seconds or so it'd take to eject the CD.

There's no 'emergency eject' on these HU (as far as I can remember), as they are motorised ejects, rather than tray loaders (like consumer CD/DVD players for the home or PC)

Having had to do this with my broken Alpine - it'll take you less time to dismantle the stereo mounts and plug the old HU back in than it would to dismantle the HU itself to get the CD out.

In fact - if you're really lucky, you might be able to get the plugs out without removing the HU - as long as wherever fitted the new HU left you with the Toyota sub-loom, as the ISO plugs fitted to your new HU won't fit the old HU...

I haven't checked the unit for such a system but I guess there is a small home somewhere (Aaron, you're wrong, even the "slot-in" CD-ROM / DVD-ROM computer units have a hole to eject the disc, at least mines have...

this hole may be hidden behind the plastic face of the unit, though...  s:? :? s:?

Interesting.. mine haven't  s:D :D s:D  I can't work out how it'd work, either - with a tray loader it's easy (it just unlatches the tray, which springs out under spring pressure), but a slot loader it'd have to unlatch the top 'clamp' from the disk (which is motorised, at least on the Alpine) and then slide the disc out (also motorised)..

At best, I can see you having to use a reaaaly long paperclip and pushing it in a long way to push the disc out.

At any rate, to borrow Gem's picture:

No visible hole - as you say, it could be behind the plastics, I suppose.

(FWIW my Alpine doesn't have one anywhere, visible or not, that I could find.. I'll try again when I replace the HU, since it still contains one of my CDs  s:lol:  s:lol:  )

Damn infernal inventions  s;) ;) s;)

You don't really need most of the connections to get the cd out. Wouldn't it be easier to just get 12V power from battery, cigarette lighter, transformer, whatever you have handy...?

I thought about suggesting that originally, but the OP said:

QuoteI had the fisher price head unit removed and an MP3 player installed today.

Which implied (to me) that he'd had the unit installed by somewhere else - which suggested he wasn't too comfortable with doing things like that.. But I could be wrong, since he's not phased by plugging the old unit back in again  s:D :D s:D

Actually, I was going to suggest grabbing a spare Molex and hooking the HU up to a PC power supply, but didn't  s:) :) s:)

You are correct in your assumption Aaron, I'm technically inept - well I do work in IT !!

I didn't end up trying to release it yesterday as the weather was so good, so instead I just filled her up with a tank of Optimax, took the roof down and drove, fanbloodytastic   s:D :D s:D    s:D :D s:D    s:D :D s:D

Knowing me I'll end up leaving the CD in there and downloading it from the net, legally of course   s:wink:  s:wink:
