Hi folks,
Just a quick one, my MR-S Turbo only came with one key and I've tried to get another cut today.
Now before you all beat be verbally for not using the 'search' facility I had a quick go and could find little or no information about obtaining a spare key for a JDM MR-S.
So, I currently use my Toad system as remote central locking/alarm/immobiliser and the Toyota key purely in the ignition barrel.
Now, am I correct in thinking that my existing Toyota key contains a chip or some kind of programming that allows me to start the car, whereby a second freshly cut £5.00 key would not start the car?
My thoughts initially led me to believe the JDM mk3 was like the JDM mk2 in as much as there was no factory fit security so a key could be obtained cheaply and would unlock doors and could be used to drive too.
I *am* right in thinking this is wrong, yes?
Here's a picture of the only key I have in question. Pictures always help s:wink:  s:wink:

JDM has no standard immobilisor from memory, so you should be finewith a new key

I'm amazed to be honest.
So nothing inside the black part of the key talks to the ECU or any other part of the car to allow it to start?
Blimey, could be inexpensive after all! Ta!
s:D :D s:D
well put it this way when we did Adams 2zz swap I seem to remember that we didn't have to worry about teh immobilsor, even thoug it was listed on teh US wiring changes list.
theres a guy who sells these keys on eBay quite often, cant find it at the mo s:? :? s:? keep an eye out on there

Urban legend has it that there's basically no car crime in Japan, so nobody has ever felt the need for an alarm or immobiliser.. (Just look at all the hugely modified tuner cars that get imported sans any kind of anti-theft systems)
*quietly dreams of living in such a land*

Huh? s:shock:  s:shock:
IIRC, there's roughly 100000 cars stolen yearly in Japan these days and it has been rising quite steeply during last few years. The funny thing is that many owners just leave their cars unlocked and even the key in the ignition when they park on the roadside or other public places. I don't remember if it's roughly half or third of them. They currently have some promotion to make owners pay more attention to theft, cause the insurance companies aren't happy with the way things are.
The owners are. If their car gets lost, great, they'll just get a new one. I'm sure you all know the value of 2-3 years old car over there. Many are silently wishing someone steals it or totals it...
Of course owners of seriously modified cars take things more seriously. But over there that just means locking up! s:lol:  s:lol: If you were a thief looking for a quick ride, would you bother breaking into a locked car, if the car next to it was unlocked with keys in ignition?
JDM definately has no transponder. When you get it cut, the shop by law has to check whether it has one. If it does they usually wont cut it without a code.
BTW. Urban legend is true many expensive cars even built today come with no standard security.

That's true, but surely you agree that there is car crime in Japan? s;) ;) s;)
There is car crime, i see theft recoverys in the auction all the time. I think they must have a low rate compared to the rest of the world though.
Right, you made me google for statistics.. s:lol:  s:lol:
Japan, 2003 - 64,233 cars reported stolen (and rising)
UK, 2003 - 282,816 cars reported stolen (and dropping, allegedly)
I can't be bothered to look up population statistics, though, so I'll leave making accurate comparisons to someone else s:) :) s:)
