Title: Brake Disks and Pads
Post by: Anonymous on February 5, 2006, 14:27
Hi everyone,

I am sure everyone is sick of this post, but I am looking for a new set of front brake disks and pads. I am getting the grinding noise and have been told their is a bit of corrosion behind the disks......mmmm time to change I think!

I don't use the car much, to be honest its a bit of a weekend car, so don't want to go over the top spending on superb sets, but I have been pointed in this direction   ---->  w www.speedways.co.uk (http://www.speedways.co.uk) w

Do I need the grooved and drilled disks? Some people on here have said they have gone for normal set, but am not sure whats best......

I bought grooved and drilled and wish i hadnt bothered. with standard discs, the pads will remove surface rust, but with grooves and drill holes, there is more surface area to rust and you cant clean it off.  therefore i suspect they will corrode a lot quicker  s:( :( s:(

That helps guys, looks like grooves and drilled it isn't! Thank you.

Is there anyway of stopping this build up of rust and this horrible grinding noise?

i waited until the new discs started corroding again then painted the areas that arent swept by the pads with grey hammerite.  just the job  s:D :D s:D

Didnt replace mine because of grinding noise. failed mot due to excessive corrosion.  when i changed them you could literally crumble the inner side of the disc in your fingers they were that bad  s:shock:  s:shock:

Yes, you can get some of that extra rust off with your fingers. But there's no way you can actually put your finger through the disc, in any place.  s:lol:  s:lol:

and what exactly causes this rust? Does it mean that even though I replace the brake disk and pads I am going to encounter this again and again?

I suppose the upside is that when I get the wheel off I can paint the calipers red.

Yes, I know that. But my old honda used to never make this noise when it rusts....

I have never heard of this before....especially so frequently.

Some brakes are more noisy, some less. I can't say mine makes any special noise even when they are rusty.

Then again, a convertible doesn't really block any noises, so you'll hear more than you ever did in a Honda.

dont forget resonance frequencies, every vehicle is a different size and if the frequency of the noise given off by the discs matches the size/length of the car then you may hear it and it may even amplify it.

Guess what ours is?  s:wink:  s:wink:
