Title: Service Coming Up!!!!
Post by: Anonymous on February 10, 2006, 12:32
Hi Guys & Gals

I have a friend doing a service for me on a 2000 MR2 and he has asked me to pick up the bits and bobs I need for the service.....He isn't a 2 specialist, and has suggested these parts.....

Air Filter – any need to have a cone shaped one?
Spark Plugs
Oil Filter ???? Is this needed??? If so which do I get....where from?
Pollen Filter??? Is this needed???
Engine Oil – Are we going fully synthetic? Does anyone have a good price anywhere etc?

He has also suggested a tub of click 50 and maybe some gear box oil for a small top up. Do you think I need these????

Has anyone got any experience on these parts? How many spark plugs do I need? Which ones do I need?

Sorry about the bombardment of questions....any help would be hugely appreciated!

I use an automotive supplier that supplies to the trade for most of this stuff - much cheaper than the mainstream shops.

Filter - if you've still got the stock airbox, nope, not a cone one.

Spark plugs - mine lasted 65,000 miles without any drop in performance  s:shock:  s:shock:  but they were severely sh@gged so worth considering - and you'll need four  s:wink:  s:wink:  Have a look here for a bit more info on plugs - copper vs iridium, bosch, ngk etc etc http://www.mr2roc.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5368 or do your own search.

Don't bother if you're less than 40,000 miles or if your mate hasn't got a decent long-reach plug spanner - they are sunk well down in the engine block.

Oil filter - yes - OC216

Oil - 5W40 synthetic (or maybe thicken up a bit if you're high mileage?), Plenty of threads on pros and cons of different oils etc if you search.

No harm in using something like Wynn's Engine Flush for 15 minutes before draining the old oil. Not sure if anyone has used the Slick(sic)50 (or other) additives in their oil though?

Pollen Filter - the '2 doesn't have one so that's sorted!

Gearbox oil - I have no clue - never touched mine.

Check your coolant level too (when cold) - MrT stock litre bottles of the "Red" coolant if you need to top up. They're also currently doing a complete flush and refill for £45 which - considering the amount of "Red" used and labour to bleed the system - isn't bad IMHO.

A general cursory check on other fluid levels, brakes etc is also worthwhile of course.

Hope this helps start you off

i'm just about to change my gearbox oil, ready for the trackdays. I've done 45K and 2 trackdays, plus i do give the poor thing some abuse so for me it seems the right time to do it.

this is what Simon at opie oils says on a suitable gearbox oil

QuoteI would suggest the Silkolene Syn5 75w-90 ester based gear oil

I needed a top up of gerabox oit after about 60k mls on the clock (probably 40k was KM before import) it was obvious because the boots were starting to leak a little

No need - you had a clutch swop recently and as they have to pull the axles it means a fluid change as it pours out when the axles are removed.

Simon's recommendation is what I went with (I have two bottles in the garage right now).

Cool thanks for this guys.

I still have the stock airbox filter....so I will stick with that one. Where do I get them from? Toyota?

My mileage is at 33000, so shall I not worry about doing the spark plugs for now?

I will have a top up on coolant and of course some screen wash too....

Thanks so much for all this guys, you have seriously helped!!!! I will start collecting all the stuff together ready for my service.
