Title: Anyone fancy ripping my pre-cats out?
Post by: Leggy on February 15, 2006, 11:17
Hi guys.

As the title says really. I have no idea what I'm doing so I'm willing to pay someone in the Midlands (who knows what they're doing) to do it for me. Any offers?

I'm coming up to 30,000 miles now, touch wood it's been OK, but now I'm starting to worrying a tad.  s:( :( s:(

Hi mate I'm in a similar situation, I also live in the Midlands (Dudley) we could make it a group thing, I've looked at trying to do it myself because I'm also worried but I really haven't a clue what I'm doing! It also looks as though the bolts on my heat shield are too corroded to just screw out. Anyone out there??

i think he charged him £120-140 but that was including other work too. he had the remainder of the precats gutted the main cat swapped and oil and filter change. (got the cat from ad jap gt300). so just to gut the precats i reckon your talking under £100

I just paid £45 to have the pre-cats removed (in the Durham area tho). This by an ex-toyota mechanic. If it hadn't been a saturday I guess it might have cost me around 17.5% more though   s:wink:  s:wink:

I'm afraid I come from the other side of the argument, if you have 3 years warranty, I don't see there is any rush. If the worst should happen and it all goes the way of the pear, Toyota will have to put it all right....  s:mrgreen:  s:mrgreen:

Having said that, when my warranty is up, I will either be paying for an extended warranty or whipping out the precats asap   s:) :) s:)

but the noise think of the noise, and the reduced restriction in the exhaust system  s:) :) s:)

...and the fact that Toyota never seem to get the repair right. They will replace the shortblock and ancillaries maybe, but how many times have we seen them leave the clogged and knackered main cat and or exhaust in to start the process all over again? It's a personal choice I guess, but mine came out with two years left on the warranty - Toyota never noticed.

Not to mention the damage might start during warranty, but the big bang could come after it run out. I'd get rid of them ASAP, while you still have a healthy engine.

Does anyone know of anyone/anywhere in the south wales area that could remove the precats? I'm in the same boat as leggy and wouldn't dream of attempting it myself.

Cheers

That was my starting point as well, but I began hearing problems that some people weren't getting an "automatic" warranty claim. they were being told it was their fault they let the oil disappear (for example), and as Sean says, once gone, can you ever guarantee it can be put back 100%, because if it isn't, you can bet your bottom $ that the next failure is out of warranty.

On the other side of the coin I also recall some comment that later pre-cats are better than the earlier ones. Don't know how true that is.

In the end, I did it. Well, we did it - thanks Mark and all the other chaps. even though the chances of having a problem are probably VERY remote i feel so relieved, and I like the extra noise!

Reading this post made me think a little.  Is there anyway of building a list of regional garages that have a proven track record of removing pre-cats, including typical prices and experiences?  Myself, along with most people on here are protective of our 2s and shudder to think of any old monkey (including and more likely Mr T mechanics) bashing away at manifold studs and then leaving clumps of pre-cat matrix bouncing around the exhaust system.

By the way, does anyone know of a decent garage in the Sheffield area with pre-cat gutting experience?  Mine's a 53 plate, therefore surgeons knife draws near.

oh whilst I'm here, and off topic (sorry), how come that since I got my red (got to be the best colour) '2 four others have appeared in the NCP I use next to where I work.   I'm looking for commission from Mr T!

feel free to start a thread of companies that will do the work, but if we see coments like "dont use this lot there a bunch of monkeys" then they'll be deleted as it could leave the club open to deformation of character suits.

I think you mean defamation.

Though I can understand an unhappy customer wishing to deform the person(s) responsible for their plight  s;-) ;-) s;-)
