Hi, I'm hoping someone can give me some advice - I bought a 2001 TOYOTA MR2 1.8 VVTi 2dr SMT Roadster about a month ago and have just had the second occasion of the alarm going off and the battery dying on me. The first time I was luckily in a friend's drive, so they jumpstarted me, but it's happened again, and I'm wonding if I'm missing something really obvious? No idea what kind of alarm i have, but think it's the standard. Are you supposed to do something specific to reset it properly??

Am hoping there is a simple answer as I love my new car, but can't handle this level of unreliability if this keeps happening every few weeks...help!!

sounds to me like you simply need a new battery?  The alarm shouldnt do that.

Glad to hear it's not something obvious I'm doing wrong! Maybe I'll get the AA out and get them to start me up so that I can get down to a battery place and check it out...thanks

is teh battery dying because teh alarm keeps going off?

or is teh alarm going off because teh battery is low?

Battery places (like Kwickfit) will test them for free.

Given the time of year and age of the car, the likelihood is that its the battery thats causing your problems. Batteries dont like the cold weather and it is often in winter that they give up.

When the voltage of a battery drops low, it often causes the alarm to sound spuriously.

As markiii suggested, theres the possibility that the alarm is draining the battery, but I havent heard of this occuring on the roadster to date.

In the first instance, you could try testing the battery as suggested or putting it onto trickle charge overnight using a battery conditioner / charger.

A few other questions though; Does the battery light ever come on when your driving? Do you ever hear the fan belt squealing loudly? These are signs of a defective alternator (or loose fanbelt) but i doubt this is the cause in your situation. Just another thing to rule out.

Is the car low mileage? If so, then the likelihood is that the car had reguarly sat stationary for a while and been drained by alarm etc then only used on short runs thus not fully charging the battery. This also has a habit of causing batteries to not hold their charge.

Hope this helps,
Richie.
