I've my '2 for just over 4 years now after it celebrated it's birthday on the 1st September and I've been thinking about how much it has cost me to run over the years.  I've not taken into account any modifications because they are more of a personal choice and not really an 'expense' of running the car.

01/09/2003 Purchase price £15,620
01/09/2004 GAP Insurance £295
01/09/2003 Insurance £518.96
22/07/2004 Club Toyota £55
04/09/2004 Road Fund Licence £145
32/12/2004 Insurance £1240.09
06/01/2004 5k oil change £69.99
13/04/2004 10k Service £92.63
10/11/2004 15k Oil change £70.35
06/01/2005 Insurance £1167
26/02/2005 20k Service £189.68
23/03/2005 4 tyres & alignment £280
27/08/2005 Road Fund Licence £150
31/08/2005 Club Toyota £55
17/09/2005 Brake pads £89.30
21/10/2005 25k oil change £47.30
05/01/2006 Insurance £840
25/02/2006 30k Service £99.96
01/06/2006 2 rear tyres ~£112
19/08/2006 35k Oil change £44.98
27/08/2006 Extended Warranty (2 yrs) £655
01/09/2006 Road Fund Licence £150
01/09/2006 MOT ~ £48
22/12/2006 40k Service £194.26
22/12/2006 Wiper blades £11.42
05/01/2007 Insurance £773
25/08/2007 MOT £50.35
25/08/2007 Oil Change £48.76
01/09/2007 Road Fund Licence £165

Glass's part exchange value £8090

Total cost £15,188.03   s:shock:  s:shock:

And that doesn't even include petrol!

Depreciation accounts for half of the total, the residuals have really taken a hit over the past couple of years.

My mileage has now reduced considerably so hope things even out over the next few years.  I've been thinking about things to replace it with but nothing out there is an out and out replacement that doesn't cost a hell of a lot more.

Hey, my oil costs £50 before you even think of a filter!

If you want cheap running costs - buy an Aygo or Citroen C1.
If you want fun but don't want to have to fix it like a Lotus or MG (the only alternatives to the MR2 for the price) then you have to pay.
Cute & fluffy animals were definitely hurt during the production of this post, there're plenty more where they came from

I wouldn't say your costs were high if you ignore the things that aren't actually needed to make the wheels go round... insurance, GAP insurance, Club Toyota and an extended warranty.

The rest is surely similar to what it costs to drive any car, depreciation included   s:? :? s:?

Quote from: "dubs"yeah what happened with your insurance? it seemed to double from 2003 to 2004?

The 1st insurance amount is 4 months of the previous policy plus the extra they wanted for the MR2.

My insurance was quite high when I got it as I was 21 and the Manchester post code doesn't help.   s:wink:  s:wink:

Don't get me wrong for pound per smile I've had my monies worth.   s:D :D s:D

IMO there isn't a RWD car out there at the moment to replace it with that can be run (relatively   s:wink:  s:wink:  ) cheaply and offers everything the '2 does which is why I'm keeping it.   s:D :D s:D

i'm sure it would scare the bejesus out of me if i sat down and worked this out for my car!  I don't even keep a track of the mpg achieved - certainly not to the level that martin (mph) showed us at keevil - a very comprehensive spreadsheet indeed!!

If you take off the "incidentals" (insurance, club toyota, tax etc) add it all up and take off the residual value the total cost is 8,979.

You don't mention the mileage, but if you were to presume an average of 10k per year thats 22.4pence per mile.

I found a break down of an entry level 1.2l Renault Clio. That breakdown calculated the costs exactly as I have done and that worked out at 17p per mile.

I think the extra smiles are definately worth that extra 5p!  s:lol:  s:lol:

Can anyone tell I'm a bit bored at work?   s:oops:  s:oops:

I was bored when I worked it out on Friday!

The mileage is 45k at the moment.  I estimate that petrol has cost me another £5k and so at around £400 a month all in it is actually pretty good value.   s:D :D s:D
