Hi all,

I'm thinking about replacing/upgrading the head unit & front speakers in my 2004 MR2.
All currently appears to be standard, the HU is starting to annoy me and drivers side speaker isn't working.

I'm thinking about getting a Sony DSX-S200X as it will play from USB and has an internal 'tray' which means that I don't need cables coming out the front. As for speakers I don't know where to start, can anyone recommend any that will be a more or less straight replacement i.e. no need to put together a MFD surround or similar?

I've changed speakers and cd players in my previous cars so feel fairly comfortable but having done some research on this forum it looks like it's a bit more fiddly than I'm used to.

I'm not looking to spend too much sub £200 for stereo and probably the same for speakers.

I'd like to try and get this done on Saturday, which doesn't leave me much time to get this sorted. Also will need to locate a facia as looking at a single DIN stereo.

Thanks in advance

Gavin

Do a search as theres loads of threads on speakers/HU etc...

£200 will get you a decent double din HU with USD, ipod interface, handsfree etc...  but I'd be tempted to try and save some money for a 2ch or 4ch amp too as the HU won't drive decent component speakers very well.  You can get JBL amps new for about £80.  Speakers - Focal A165 are about £150 and are popular but the tweeters can be harsh.  I have some phonocar components in mine that were pretty cheap and do sound good, they were £60.

Oh as a must sound deaden your doors (£20 B&Q flashing tape)  or even the most expensive speakers will sound rubbish.

Heres a few handy threads

Yep, there is - if you search on a well known auction site - item number is 220688583475

There is a seller in Germany selling adapters for approx £20 incl postage.

Hope this helps,

Another option is to take stock speakers and cut the speaker out of the surround and fix new speaker into it. The OEM is one moulded piece so it is very much your shout as to how its all put together again.

Thanks for all the info, I've read through most of the posts on here but couldn't see anything about removing the door panels apart from a couple of links that are now dead.
I think that I'll try and use the existing mountings for the speakers.
I've decided to go with a double din unit as I found one that has BT, USB (back & front) & ipod. Hopefully should get delivered to me at work today so tomorrow I can have a fiddle in the MR2.
I haven't really done anything since I got the car in July so is overdue some attention.

Door panels are simple
2 screws in door handle
2 screws in arm rest (remove plastic cover)
One screw in door opening lever
The tricky part is getting that cup out, you need to push it to the back of the car as you lever it out of the door skin.

You also need to buy some flashing tape or Dynamat to line the doors with. I made the mistake of not bothering when I first changed my speakers, so had to take the door panels off again. The new speakers will be louder and more bassy than the old ones and the doors will rattle a lot whenever the volume goes up. If you go with flashing tape, put it all over the back of the panel. You might find you have to put some on the parts where the plastic touches the metal of the door as these can be the worst culprits for rattling.
