Been at it all week.  s:shock:  s:shock:  Took off the Apexi Power Intake yesterday. I cannot believe that Toyota sell a car that sounds this crap!  s:x :x s:x  I had forgotten. Also took off the flex plate – OMG the Toyota parts are so inadequate!

One thing I have noticed however – the car pulls away more cleanly now, whereas it used to have a moment of 'lag' with the Apexi fitted.  s:? :? s:?   Anyone else had this? And possible reasons? The filter itself wasn't too dirty, and I've just washed it. Hope it isn't papier mache by tomorrow!

Yep I definitely get a bit of lag which is more noticeable in warmer weather when my car seems to hesitate if I stamp on it.  I've order one of the inlet ducts in the GB that Mark is organizing.  So I'm going to do some rough comparisons and the Apexi may end up on the garage shelf.

As for the noise well I'm hoping that my H&S exhaust will compensate for the lack of Apexi.

I too get the slight lag. Let me know how the cleaning turns out, there was a debate about this ages ago but no-one tried it. It will be interesting to see if it works OK.

No idea about the reasons, but I noticed the same. I actually ended up taking the Apexi off, cause I didn't like that at all  s:? :? s:?
Sure you can live without 500hp, but it\'s languishing.

So what did you do instead for 'noise'?  s:? :? s:?

Could that be something to do with your car being an SMT?  My manual definitely has a pause but it is more noticeable in warmer waether.

Could the car pull away better without the Apexi because the standard airbox shields heat more efficiently? With the Apexi, the air in the vacuum in the induction pipe may be warmer, and its only when you really put your foot down that it takes a gulp of fresh, colder air?   s:?: :?: s:?:    s:? :? s:?    s:?: :?: s:?:

So on that note, the original plastic pipe is a better thermal insulator than the metal Apexi one?

What could we do to keep the air in the Apexi pipe cold?  s:? :? s:?  Would lagging it increase or decrease the air temperature inside?

Thoughts anyone?

It was just a thought Darth...I was thinking how the Apexi pipe is metal etc..I would envisage the air to be warmer in the tube..when it passes the Maf it would read warmer air presumably..until the colder air passes at which point the maf recognises it..then the performance improves..may be well off.. suppose you could shield the induction pipe with heat retarding material/paint?

in an ideal world ceramic coat it.

of course your better of with the PPE design if thats you aim as it sucks cooler air to start with.

I suppose this is why our intake manifold is plastic? wheras teh 2zz whihc isn't supposed to go in teh roadster ismetal?

Well here's the intake all wrapped. Just wait for the weekend to install it. It's supposedly heat resistant, so fingers crossed.  s:? :? s:?

The idea is that the silver reflects the heat off the pipe, thus keeping the air inside cool. We shall see.

Looks good Darth.  Hope it will help with the hesitancy! Just looking at a few Apexi pics, to me the MAF is a good way further down the inlect tract than with the OE filter.  I think this may well explain why there is a hesitancy, as the increased colume of air takes longer to get to the MAF.  I suppose you could possibly shorten the inlet tract, but then your going to put the filter closer to the engine and presumably increase the temp of the airflow.

The shorter tract of the PPE, doesn't seem to be as affected from what i've read on spyderchat, though of course that might be because it s a CAI.

Thinking aloud here as i'm hopefully getting an apexi when i can convince my dealer it wont void the warranty..

I'd put my money on this.  I've never seen a mod on the MR2 that wouldn't just pull in more hot air, the PPE one looked promising.  The stock air box is about as good as it gets on this engine, and I bet PPEs power increase is probably more from the movement to behind the battery than anything else.
