Have been thinking of buying for a while now, having read all posts on precats etc, though my safest route would be to buy from toyota, am buying second hand..
went to my local dealer to look at a 02 black 24000 miles, first of all he told me the car had originally been purchased of them and was also serviced by them, while he was getting a value on my part ex, I got the keys to have a look, opened the glove box and found the handbooks etc, there was a purchase invoice, it would seem the car had been bought down south also the service book hadnt been stamped for both 10000 and 20000 services, I asked about this and he said sometimes the books arent stamped...

I would have though it would have been everyones priority to get books stamped, anyway by this time i was unsure so left..
Am starting to think I might as well by private and take a chance and take out some form of warranty afterwards...

Caveat Emptor...

Thats the problem with salesmen, they just cannot open their mouths without a river of BS spewing forth. Report it to his superiors, as he is selling a car on the premise that its has remaining warranty, when they'll just deny any responsibility due to the missing service stamps. A less knowledgable person would have been stuffed when it came to warranty time...

Yes kind of annoying that I was willing to spend more for peace of mind and you still get stuff like this......

It is possible he was right... their computer should have a service record for the car.

So if they say it's been serviced, get 'em to stamp the book for the services it should have had.  If they refuse, walk away.

Nah, walk away anyway - they're clearly disorganised, know nothing about the car's history and are just interested in getting your money.  Find a dealer who takes a little more care.

Knobs have no idea what they are tallking about. A premium car like that, they should all know the history of wothout looking it up. If they can't get that right, god KNOWS what the rest of the service would be like

Walk away. go elsewhere. Not as if you won't find one anywhere else......

Got my car serviced last Month, was given the receipt etc & was told the the service book was in the car. Me being an untrusting SOB I checked & the book hadn't been stamped so I took it back in to get them to stamp it. Maybe some people are more trusting that me  s:roll:  s:roll:   Having said I would still walk away.

If you get a private car checked by RAC or AA etc & it is less than three years old with a stamped FULL service history then any problems should be covered by warranty anyway - that's what I did & have had new wheels & they replaced the suspension today because I was complaining of a knock on full lock - I didn't bother telling them that the knock had gone since I put new tyres on with the service  s:oops:  s:oops:

you know what, I was didnt realise that the warranty was transferable, so any car no matter were it is bought under 3 years old would be covered ????..
now if this is so I will buy private....

I bought mine (51 plate) privately in July & have had two things done under warranty  s:D :D s:D

I was a bit concerned because I hadn't seen any forms to transfer it over but apparently you don't need to, might be worth checking - phone a Service Dept of Mr T & ask but I have had no problems (after all it's the car that's covered)

One thing though - if you do buy private, make sure that you get both keys AND a grey key off the seller!

By grey key I take it you mean one the seller has had made????

Forgot to mention rang my local toyota service dept and asked about warranties etc, and they said if the car was already in warranty ie 3 years old, then I could just extend if the car was older than 3 years old they would have to inspect, this would cost £110.00 plust vat..

Guess if necessary its a case of getting the car of the seller for a day, wouldnt want to buy a car out of warranty and then find it fails toyota inspection!!!!

No, you should get your two ordinary keys (black with Toyota emblem & buttons for lock/unlock) AND another key that is grey with no buttons but does have the Toyota emblem. This should also have a metal plate on with a stamped number.

I can't remember why you get this BUT I do know that you need it.
I think that Mr T will charge £170 for a replacement key.

Someone on here may know why you get the grey key  s:? :? s:?

i would walk away, as i have had first hand experience of not having a service/service stamp in the book and warranty claims.
basically any engine problems and no service record(or indead no service) then no warranty claim.
find a better 2'.
good luck.  s:lol:  s:lol:

I asked this question on friday and was told that all they need is the cars chassis number to tell if it's in warranty or not.

They gave me the impression they could check it of the registration number....

I too didn't have my book stamped at it's service, so had to take it back and get it done.  However, I would've thought though that they should be able to look up on the computer for a particular car...

As for the grey key, then it's meant to be a valet key that you can leave with a hotel/garage etc.  It does everything apart from allowing access to the glovebox/rear bins etc..

Are you sure?

I was told it was the master key for reprogramming the other ignition keys and should not be given to anyone as they could get a valid duplicate made based on the posession of the master key.

Its true, I recently got a quote for something like £200 for a new black remote key... You need one of these keys to activate the programming sequence on the ECU and program further keys. No black keys? then bend over as Mr T charges you for a new ECU, new locks, new keys, plus fitting and programming. The grey key cannot be used for programming  s:cry:  s:cry:

yeah, what he said.  akaik, the grey key contains no electronics, just a standard plastic jobbie that could probably be got from most key cutting places...

Its got a transponder chip for the immobiliser in it. You can get a key cut at your local shoe repairer, and it'll work the locks, but it wont start. (Unless you have an import from certain markets where immobilisers werent fitted of course...)
