I was looking to permanently install a small tablet/touch screen media player but i'm just wondering how best to power it without any visible cabling.

Any one have any suggestions?

I bow to you superior knowledge!

Wouldn't that depend on what you were installing, where it was going, and how it would integrate with existing elements of the car!?

You could look at inductive charging systems (try a Google search for your desired brand of tablet) you can seen an iPad product at
http://www.launchport.com/ but there are others. for media playback you may be able to keep it wire free by using Bluetooth audio streaming if your car audio system can support it, some hands-free kits can also support too.

Good luck

Not really... Any audio would run from the output of the device to the aux input of my head unit. Its not the inergtation with the system that would be the issue, just the power supply. It would be used mostly for video and possibly sat nav feature depending on the device. So in short its not the connectivity that phases me, just the best way to power a device other than fron the stereo head unit

I meant as in "stand alone" or "add on" to the head unit i.e. powered separately plus headunit, powered separately replacing headunit, or powered through headunit.
I just felt a tad more detail might have helped.

My mate is looking to do one at the minute in his car using an iPad in addition to his headunit. He's in a similar predicament of what is the best route to making the best of it all... Would be good to see any results that you come to. There was one not long ago that had it mounted above the central vents but I can't remember for the life of me what the thread is called. Hopefully that'll jog someone else's memory.

No worries, i wasnt trying to be funny. I would only really rely on the aux input of my existing head unit, so im looking at a seperate power supply. I thought about possibly dropping the cigarette lighter back behind the console then plugging the hole with a plastic cap, so running the devise off the recessed lighter supply using a standard USB car charger, also thought about introducing a switch into the curcuit so a rechargable devise isnt a constant draw on the battery. Will it work? ive no idea... but i'm happy to give it a go, in the name of science!

Well the ignition is required to be on for charging using the cigarette lighter so you would be fine in that respect.

What about piggybacking another cigarette lighter off the existing wiring (like the single to twin adaptors you can buy, but hidden) and then you could retain your cigarette lighter on show and not have to plug it up?

I know, I had a dodgy battery a while ago so get paranoid about running multiple devices. Not a bad idea at all! I thought about usingvthe lighter as i dont smoke and my ashtrays an ipod dock but if i ever need to run another device im out of luck, so the piggybacking would be ideal... this has got me thinking, I wonder if I could install a permanent USB power supply in the dash
