On my pads, front and rear, two of the pads have an 'ear' of metal sticking out at one end.
Does it matter where this pad is fitted?

Thanks.

Yes thats the pad failure audiable warning when the pad wears down to unsafe limits - metal on metal is heard next when the friction material is worn away. The pads fit in pairs and if fitted incorrectly you will have a hell of a job getting the pad in the caliper. Replace exactly as they come out. If you dont you will spend hours trying to fit them. I did a double swop by accident last year and took me ages to figure it out on the front. Dont forget if you are replacing the rear pads you will need a windback tool to wind the piston back into the caliper - search windback tools as there have been a couple of fairly recent posts on just that.

IIRC the pad with the spring is always the outer pad, both front and rear.
