Can any one suggest a good pair of component speakers from experience for less than 100 quid? They would be powered by a decent Sony head unit and no amp.

I would look at the vibe / fli range. They are good value for money and sound great when powered by headunit.

I can recommend Focal 165a's and a roll of wickes roll flashing to sound proof the doors  s;) ;) s;)

Does the standard headunit have enough power for the focals ?

It's not a standard head unit.

Even a high powered after market headunit would only have a max of 60 watts x4 which wouldnt be enough to power something as special as the focals? Worth checking what the minimum input power. The focals would sound lovely with an external powered amp, they are cracking speakers

I'm running mine off a JVC head unit, 4x50w (which in reality is probably more like 25-30w) no doubt they would sound better run off an external amp, as most speakers would, but they do sound good as is, I may amp them up in the future but I'm happy with it as it is at the moment.

The focal A165s are sensitive enough to run off a head unit and cost new is just less than £100, tought to beat for the money.  They sound better off an amp of course.
2003 Silver MR2 - Very Very Standard + Leccy Renault Zoe aka the battery mobile.
Ex Blue 04 MR2 - TTE Turbo\'d ~185bhp/200lbs/ft, Sports Clutch, Breast Plate, Lowered & half decent audio
Ex Silver 05 MR2 -  SP turbo conversion 227bhp, 205lbs/ft, with  cobra dual exit exhaust.

I can vouch for that having recently upgraded to the Focals

Do the focals fit easily? Are the tweeters a direct fit?

They are a little bigger than the stock ones, I ditched the stock covers, (offer them up to others, pfl owners like them) made the hole in the door card a little bigger with a Stanley knife and used the covers supplied with the Focals.

For the main speakers I gutted the mount that the Toyota speakers are mounted to and fitted the focals to it.

Obviously there's no going back with this arrangement, alternatively you can make your own main mounts and can probable work out a way of fitting the tweeters behind the stock covers, should you in the future wish to return it to stock?

As said above slight triming required for the focal tweeters, however the stock covers will fit back if you ever uninstall.  I put mine back on my first MR2 before I traded it, after removing my A165s.

Judging by your other post on the speaker thread I take it your referring to the main speaker at the bottom of the door?
What I was referring to was the tweeter up the top. For the focal install I didn't need to adjust the bottom hole to make them fit?

I've seen a couple of people that have done it, one sold the car (Some female name like Precious or something) and I think dj is the other has but most of his photobucket pics seem to have been removed so can't find it in his previous posts. Both of them were Veilside kitted  s:) :) s:)

I was asking as was going to be a cheapskate and get the Hertz hcx165 but they are coax £160 but think ill stick with the hsk165 £260 so don't have to cut the cards. I'm asking around to get some mdf mounts in 22mm made for me like on spydermagazine ill post some pics up when all is finally fitted

One more thing when I checked the focal mounting depth its only couple mm off the Hertz so will I need mdf mounts? On spidermagazine he said he needed mfd mounts when fitting 70mm depth speakers the Hertz are just under. Yet on forum it appears you can all get the focals on the original speaker adaptors

Yeah no problems here, I just gutted the OE speakers off the grey plastic surrounds to leave me with the outer ring and screwed my vocals to them  :-) :-) :-)
Added bonus being the OE mounts have a sort of guard think built into them I guess to stop condensation dripping onto the outside of the cones?
