"Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., today announced its plans to discontinue sales of the Celica and MR2 sports cars by the end of the 2005 model year."

Need I say more?  s:roll:  s:roll:
Sure you can live without 500hp, but it\'s languishing.

This sort of rings true, as I heard they are bringing out a Celica/MR2 hybrid in 2007 (with a hardtop convertable)... which is what our next car will be.

I can't see them maintaining the mid engine layout with a folding roof though - they take a lot of room at the rear and are very heavy   s:? :? s:?

It seems odd to me that Toyota would merge the Celica/MR2 into one model.. that would put it into Peugeot 307CC territory, which is more of a fashion accessory than any kind of sports car.

Why not just make a Corolla "CC" instead? Peugeot did it with the 206.

Even though the current Roadster is niche market, I'm sure the rave reviews from the motoring press have raised Toyota's brand profile a little - I wouldn't really pay attention to anything Vauxhall did if they hadn't made the VX220..

They've been making the low volume MR2 since about 1986(?), that's a long time to just kill it off.. I reckon there's secret plans for a new Roadster in 2005, with a major body redesign, and a lot more power - Toyota have the engines to do it (2ZZ, TTE's Turbo), so why not?!

If I were TTE I'd be a bit miffed... they've not even got to the market yet with their turbo and already Toyota are closing up shop.

They are?

So far I've only seen Toyota USA announce that they are going to stop selling MR2 and Celica in USA. I bet TTE couldn't care less about it  s:roll:  s:roll:

Remember that ToyotaUSA also quit selling Mk2 MR2 after...uhm...93 or 95 or whatever and it was still available in Europe years after that. IIRC, they also quit selling Supra years before the model was canceled.

USA does not equal world!  s:twisted:  s:twisted:  Though Bush may try it...

well if it's only the US that's stopping, then I'm not fussed... if it's an indication of Toyota 'emselves... well that's a whole different story.

Unless of course you're one of the vast majority of US citizens that dont even have a passport.  s:roll:  s:roll:

Tems right. The US market lost the mk2 MR2 in '95. Just like that, no more '2s for the Yanks, but we still got it right up until the point where the Mk3 came into production.

Toyota Europe have as yet released no such press release, same goes for Toyota Japan.
