Hi,

I'm considering replacing the current stock head unit and speakers on my fl mr2, I was budgeting around £200 for the head unit and speakers.
I would really like a double din head unit and quite like the look of the Kenwood DPX305U which is available for just under £100.00.
Speakers I'm a bit confused about, I've seen some Kenwood KFC-S703P and some Infinity Reference 6500cx but I don't have much experience with these things.

I've already got the ISO adapter, trim mount and speaker mounts. I also take on board about sound deadening the doors.

Many thanks for your thoughts.

Ps, I'm in my late forties so more into rock than drum & bass.

I put a Sony wxgt90 bt bluetooth double din in last week( comes with remote control and mic for bluetooth calls),very happy with it and i think it would be even better with upgraded speakers.....half price in Halfords @ £129.99.....really suits the car especially with the colour set to amber.....fit an aerial switch while you are at it...fit it to the wiring adaptor to save cutting the original wiring ( red button below ashtray in pic below).....the only problem i had was the screws for the brackets were not long enough to go through the brackets and new side filler pieces.

hi Mike

I have some infinity 6.5s which you can have a listen to. definitely better than OEM, but I have no experience with anything else. On holiday at moment, but back on Sunday night, Monday evening earliest. give a phone if you want to have a listen.

Hi, Roger,

Sorry for the delay in answering you, was struck down with man flu!
Yes that would be good, there's no rush on my part so I'll give you a call at some point.

Cheers,

Well I got the Kenwood DPX305U head unit and fitted it this weekend. Fitting went quite well and I'm very pleased with it. Probably leave it a month or so to get and fit the speakers.

re. speakers maybe give the hertz hi-energy hsk165 package a try if spend a bit more, take a lot more than rated power and sound good even at high volume they dont let up.

Hertz are good, also look at mb quart.  I have them and they are very good.
2001 low mileage, mods: K&N 57i gen 2, toyosports manifold and Cobra twin exhaust, unichip. Colour coded side vents and spoiler.  not forgetting the ICE Install, stock sony head unit, sony xa300 aux input, bluetooth connection, 4 channel hertz digital amp, 2 channel hertz ep2 amp, mb quart components, hertz 10" subwoofer in the bins and UD JL 6.5 in sub. Boom!

Whats best for speakers, keeping the component set up or would 2 or 3-way be just as good or better?

Had a quick look at the hertz hi-energy hsk165 online, I'm sure they're very good but they're a bit over budget for me, thanks for the suggestion though.
Did see some Hertz and MB quart component speakers that were in budget though.

Can anyone shed a little more light on the Ariel switch please? A definite must in my opinion! Where can this switch be had from? Which wire is for the Ariel?

I'm putting in an install soon! Got one of Nathan's under dash sub boxes on the way and a JL sub, alpine amp, and Alpine CDE235BT head unit, I'll probably go for focal speakers for the doors.

Ive been given a set of infinity reference 6020cs. Anyone have any experience of these? Should go well with my under dash sub. Just need an amp that will fit under the passenger seat....

I got lucky with the aerial situation. I installed a Sony single DIN headunit in my 2 and the traffic announcement button acts as the aerial switch as standard. The aerial is always up if the radio is selected (though signal is non existant since fitting so it's never on), but play the iPod and you can keep the aerial down by turning the TA button off, and the best thing is it doesn't reset when you turn the car off so as I only listen to my iPod, it is always down. If I want to refit the standard HU again, it will go back to how it was as standard.
