My OEM stereo has finally given up the ghost and won't play CDs any more. Looking at new ones in Halfrauds, don't have enough knowledge to fit myself so happy to pay them to do so, but without looking at my car (was up there on my bike) they tried to tell me my car doesn't have a double DIN sized space and that I should have single DIN plus a filler.

Car is a pre-facelift SMT (not that I think the SMT has anything to do with it) and looks roughly the right size - thoughts, please? I'm not too fussy provided it plays decently and has an auxiliary port as so little of my music is actually on CD these days  s:) :) s:)

Thanks muchly!

they are right and wrong

the sony you have is lightly smaller than double din, but the brackets and surround make it fit into a double din space

once all removed the space is the correct size

Assuming you get a double din HU you simply need this part number for the surround  T55423-17040-c0

electrically the Toyota loom already comes with a Toyota to sony adaptor look. If you buy a sony unit it plugs right in. If you buy anything else (I'll use Apline as an example) you will need either a Toyota to Alpine adaptor or, a Toyota to ISO + ISO to Alpine connector

The latter assumes your new HU doesn't have and ISO plug?

Mark, you're a gem/star-shaped person (delete as preferred).

What's an ISO plug?

Cheers for part number - surround from Toyota I assume?

I'm looking at this one which is in fact a Sony, that bodes well?

Fitted one the other week   s:lol:  s:lol:

Very good head unit, really pleased with it....afaik your old surround will be ok (the original Sony unit)with this unit, mine was a facelift so had to buy the side filler pieces in the pic,i was told on here i could use a pre facelift surround instead.....brackets fit fine, the holes are marked T for Toyota.

An iso plug is an adaptor lead to convert the factory wiring to the after market iso fitting to make fitting plug and play....approx £2.50 on ebay....mine was a facelift so not sure if the pre facelifts need the lead as they had a Sony unit??...you might want to consider the aerial switch mod which saves the aerial being up when playing cds etc.....just put a simple inline switch on the blue remote wire on the iso lead,no need to cut into the cars original wiring,pm me if you want more info on the unit/aerial mod.

I bought 2 tiny usb sticks on Amazon,16GB each, approx £7 each, they stick out about 5mm from the unit.......great job,you can also stream from any bluetooth device, connect an ipod or walkman via usb or bluetooth, navigation is good with all formats.

If it's a pre facelift as mine is you don't need anything but an ISO cable, if it has the original Sony head unit. You can re use the surround it's easy.
2001 low mileage, mods: K&N 57i gen 2, toyosports manifold and Cobra twin exhaust, unichip. Colour coded side vents and spoiler.  not forgetting the ICE Install, stock sony head unit, sony xa300 aux input, bluetooth connection, 4 channel hertz digital amp, 2 channel hertz ep2 amp, mb quart components, hertz 10" subwoofer in the bins and UD JL 6.5 in sub. Boom!

ISO is a German standard, in principle all car stereos confirm to ISO in practice almost none do. Whilst technically its possible to get say a Toyota to Alpine cable, in practice good luck hence you normally need to car to ISO and ISO to head unit, as its easy to get converters to/from ISO wiring standards

yes thats a part number for the proper surround from Toyota, technically if you go that route you also need the 2 filler pieces I forgot to mention, which are

T86221-52050
T86221-52060

however you can use the slightly odd shaped surround from your prefacelift OEM Sony if you want instead of those 2 plastic bits. Your choice

This may make useful reading also ref how it all comes apart if your fitting a single DIN

Yes old preface surround and brackets will fit any double din unit. If you want a hand fitting just say and you can pop down and ill give you a hand. As mark said as long as its a Sony you wont need a Toyota to iso adapter.
