Rasberry Pi In Car Stereo/Computer

I'm thinking of doing one for my Mk1. Main issue is how I'm going to mount everything since I don't know if the Mk1 has any standard mountings or not.

Are you going to have any CAN-bus sniffing and/or datalogging? I recently built a datalogger for our Solar Car so I have a bit of experience in that area if you need any help.

One question I have is how have you done the DC/DC conversion to 5V? I've been using cheap buck converters from china which seem to work okay, although I haven't tried them with a noisy aternator at one end.

Not sure if BeardedGremlin has gotten any further on this.

I think there's two completely different paths; one for stereo and one for computer.
Stereo obviously requires no access at all to CAN-BUS and the likes. Whereas it would be pretty nice to have access to all of the data available via CAN on a screen.

Personally some of my ideas were (in the Can-less Mk1):

Audio player from onboard memory + USB (Syncing with home media sounds quite neat)
Bluetooth for audio control and audio streaming
GPS module + 3axis accelerometer for datalogging
2x20 Char VFD display for that retro feel (depends what I can find and if I find a good way to mount it)
Wifi hotspot to allow easy communication with laptop/phone (and automatic connection to home network)
Speedometer on my watch (probably not, but not out of the realms of possibility. Data would come from the GPS.)
And then I'm wondering if I should also fit a 7" LCD touchscreen or similar and have sat-nav etc.

Maybe I am being a bit too ambitious.  s:lol: :lol: s:lol:

It does sound like a lot, but most of those items can be set up fairly quickly. There's so many guides on how to do all this stuff on the internet. The VFD is the only real thing I'd have to start from scratch, but they generally aren't too hard to reverse engineer. As I mentioned, my main worry is how I'm going to mount everything.
