Better sounding exhaust.

Hi guys
Just got my new toy in the shape of a 2000 mk3 in red (naturally). I would like to get a bit more of a roarty note from the exhaust. I'm not talking Subaru rumble or Civic crackle but just a more sporty sound. With out resorting to a whole load of new plumbing what are my options? Any ideas?.
Give me some wheels if I can\'t have wings.

Hello and welcome.

Your options like most things depend on the budget you have set aside.
Have a poke around using the search facility top right corner.
There is a whole thread on zorsts somewhere.

All exciting stuff, but.
Before spending on shiny bits.
Make sure your tyres are good. same brand correct stagger etc. Check the sub frame for any hidden nasties. Make sure there sis oil in it, and keep checking for the 1st month or so.
And if you can whip out the o2 sensors and check the condition of the precats if they are still there.

All good advice there from Ardent.

As above.
Then go on the look out for TTE Remus or Fox exhausts.
Unless you want to be an ASBO kind of person avoid Cobra too loud.

Nooooooooooooooooo   s:crazyeyes:  s:crazyeyes:

Cobra is cool   s:) :) s:)   not ASBO.  Its the neighbours giving it a bad name - the cat and manifold   s:twisted:  s:twisted:

The best for a frooty, not frunky sound   s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce:    s:bounce: :bounce: s:bounce:

TTE sounds the best bar none.
Janspeed looks the best.

My vote goes to the Remus too, but I'll be looking up the Fox as it IS cheaper. I'd be willing to take the Fox if its almost on par, considering the price difference and comments around these forums.

Remus:  m http://www.remusuk.com/model.asp?id=W3% ... man=Toyota m
Fox:  m http://www.dcperformance.co.uk/uprated/ ... r2-w3.html m

My understanding with these is that on idle or low revs they're not "in your face" so you won't wake the neighbors, but once you boot it they have a nice roar.

Last time someone with a cobra came for a visit I heard him round the block.
Not the sort of noise you want to be making when you set out for Scotland at 5 in the morning.
I know loadswine is very happy with his fox.

The Fox says it has 55mm pipes, is that a bit small if you are going to do some tuning? Does anyone know what diameter the other options are?
Silver 2004 MR2 -  Unmodified but very shiny.

A single 55mm is enough for a lot more hp than you're likely to get from an MR2.

Well I know Matt/Redline had trouble with the cobra on mine when I went SP200 to SP240.  The internals of that exhaust were bottlenecking it a bit.  We got 225bhp out of it though.
2003 Silver MR2 - Very Very Standard + Leccy Renault Zoe aka the battery mobile.
Ex Blue 04 MR2 - TTE Turbo\'d ~185bhp/200lbs/ft, Sports Clutch, Breast Plate, Lowered & half decent audio
Ex Silver 05 MR2 -  SP turbo conversion 227bhp, 205lbs/ft, with  cobra dual exit exhaust.

Nice one Jim, welcome to the club  s:) :) s:)  But nerve racking cutting lumps out the bumper but worth it now. Just means it'll be che forevermore lol. Did it take much bracket modifying??

Is this one a che or janspeed?

Is there any way to tell the difference without finding a brand label?

A janspeed will be stamped on the backbox, get under and have a look....another way of telling....the janspeed will be loud.....proper loud! Also, it looks as if it has tapered pipes (see the shine) which the latest Che doesn't, unsure of previous versions but not like my 1yr Che

Hi Dougie no I only took the bottom hanger off the exhaust at the cat and replaced with some wire! managed to fit the exhaust onto the top hangers although its doesn't hang from them its above them if you know what I mean, managed to get 2 sore fingers in the process of taking one of the hangers off though couldn't say anything for a while as the pain was so bad!!
Sounds good now though worth the pain  s:) :) s:)

Depending on what noise you are after, an air filter like the K&N 57i kits will give you some noise when you put your foot down

That one is a che as far as I can tell. The janspeed one has a nice rolled lip. See above.

Looks like its got a sports cat.  Don't think the Che would fit on a standard cat without a bumper cut-out   s:? :? s:?

Anyhow this is maybe getting away from the initial question   s:bowdown:  s:bowdown:

Getting back to it   s:crazyeyes:  s:crazyeyes:  .

Depends what you want, but don't trust recordings because apart from the obvious recording/playback levels a big factor is manifold and cat   s:roll:  s:roll: .  Also a lot are without the engine under pressure - noisy ASBO's with hormonal problems   s:roll:  s:roll:

My quad is (honestly   s:wink:  s:wink:  ) not ASBO as fitted to de-cat (fleabay) manifold and standard cat.  The BMC CDA is not intrusive, but cuts down the chatter from the passenger side of the car   s:lol:  s:lol:

Having recently done a lot of trawling for myself the Fox is probably currently the cheapest option at about the £350.  The hardest bit of your plumbing as you put it   s:oops:  s:oops:  is getting the old box out   s:crazyeyes:  s:crazyeyes:

I was thinking this was a good budget option,  I've been in several cars with standard exhaust and induction kits. They usually sound a little more aggressive on idle, mental on full bore acceleration, but mostly had a quiet, non-boomy cruising speed.

None were MR2s, and the only exception was a mk5 First that was just painfully loud at all times with a universal stainless steel cone filter.
