Evening all,

So the stereo goodies are starting to arrive, Focals, Cables etc so thinking about sound deadening the doors, is this what everyone uses to bridge the gaps?

 m http://www.wickes.co.uk/Wickes-Self-Adh ... m/p/243010 m

Also do people apply to the inside of the outer door skin or just bridge the holes and cover the inner panel for better bass response? The outer door slins don't seem that thin to me.

Is there any issues with this tape heating up on the inside of the door during the two weeks of summer we normally getand does it give off any odour in the cabin

Lastly.... How many rolls roughly for the doors? I've not got a wickes near me so as I'm driving to the Toyota dealer on Tuesday I'll pick up some up then.

Cheers

Imagine the disappointment when I read the thread and there is no trace of tape that flashes! I mean light up tape would be the best thing ever!  s8) 8) s8)   s8) 8) s8)

Anyhoo, to answer your more sensible question. People do both options with th the tape. Some just chose to cover the larger holes and others go mental and cover everything.

I guess, therefore, it depends on the quality of your ears.  s;-) ;-) s;-)

Hi,

I think that is the width I used on my doors. One roll did both doors with a tiny bit left over. I put it on the inside of the door skins, the inner door skin and even a bit on the inside of the door panels.

I think I just stuck it everywhere I could get to. Its a very messy job so you could do with some disposable gloves and some white spirit to clean up with. No smell or issues afterwards.

Just a tip when using if, it is bituminous so a hair dryer to warm up the paint work, even the sheet after you have cut it to size, makes it a little bit more maleable. A wallpaper paste roller is quite handy then to make sure it sticks nice.

I used gutter sealing tape to good effect on old cars (metro escort etc), before modern devices allowing easier research and purchasing.
probably like this stuff  m http://www.screwfix.com/p/no-nonsense-f ... -10m/94496 m  but may have been real lead.

You can have your flashing tape. Not sure it's nice myself.

I think it does have a peel off backing paper but the mess comes largely from the edge of the sheet.

Thats a good point about the temperature as its easier to do when its warmer.

Good advice, but also ensure the doors are clean. I used a floor wipe to remove any dirt the a wipe over with meths

I personally wouldn't use flashing tape. I spent about £30 on eBay to get the correct butyl-based deadening sheets, knowing it won't peel off and it's twice as thick as flashing.

I know people who have used flashing will say "waste of money, mine hasn't peeled" and the debate will rage on for ever, but I felt the difference between £15 and £30 wasn't worth worrying about.

If it peels inside the door, it could stick to the window and that will cost an awful lot in time (and possibly money) to correct

You can help avoid peeling by trimming the corners of whatever you use, and I found the easiest thing to apply pressure with was the butt of a screwdriver, use a nice bulbous one, no edges!

Just a thought...

Have a look in your local pound shop, I picked up a couple of thin foam camping mats, they're made from closed-cell foam so don't hold water

I stuck bits of these between the inner skin and door card to reduce vibrations, seemed to work well

Stuck mine to the inside of the outer door skin and to the back of the door card, you can certainly hear the difference when you close your door after its done. You might also want to apply a bit of silicone sealant to the door card push clips to stop them rattling?

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I, like everyone else, like to save cash where I can but having used bitumen based products myself in the past i'm not a big fan and although some of the flashing tape descriptions sound the same as dynamat type products I guess their not.

VX220.... Can you provide a link to the product you used (eager to get this purchased as the remaining install items whould hopefuly arrive in the next week. £30 to do the doors isn't bad at all for actual sound deadening and if I'm going to do this would rather a thicker product with an audible difference to the tape. There are sooo many on ebay I wouldn't know which to get unless I went for Dynamat and I can't afford to sell a kidney at the moment   s:lol:  s:lol:

Did the thirty quid pack you bought do both doors all over?

Cheers

I don't have a link but search "iso pro sound deadening" on eBay UK

I used a decorating heat gun, as last time I used a hair dryer it burnt out

Mine has two layers over most of the outer door skin, and used it to cover as much as possible of the inner door skin, including filling the holes so the sound wave off the back of the speaker can't reach the soundwave off the front
